pregnant but still have my period?

I'm probably more or less asking this just to reassure myself...but here goes.
I'm on birth control pills. This weekend I had "unprotected sex" (normally I make my bf wear a condom too because I'm so paranoid!)...I was on the green pills of Ortho Tri Cyclen. I got my period yesterday as I normally would, but it's just been a lot lighter than normal with less cramping than usual. I have been working out a lot recently, esp. in the past month, and have lost a couple pounds and possibly a couple % body fat (I was 22% to begin with). So could it just be the effects of working out that have caused the lighter period and not a pregnancy? I've read that you can have some spotting when the embryo implants in the uterus, but that that won't happen until about 8-10 days after conception. It's only been about 4 days since the first possible conception so I don't think it's just spotting. I was thinking I should take a home pregnancy test to ease my mind, but I don't want to waste my time & money by taking it too soon. When is the soonest I could take one that would give the most accurate result? All the info I've read says that you should take it like a week after your missed period, but since I haven't missed one should I still wait until next week? Sorry so long, thanks for any input!
