I was on the shot for two years. My husband and I are ready to start a family. I got off the shot in Aug. since then I had a normal period, but I am now a week late. I don't want to get my hopes up. I think the reason why I have not started is because my shot would be due this month. Do you guys have any advise?

I too was on the shot for a year --(mind if I ask how your body reacted to the shot?) My last shot was due around August and needless to say AF showed up and since then have been getting AF but each month it get's later and later (like last month I was 8 days late) also I don't know if this helps or not (AF is no differant in how long it last or anything like that) but around the time I should ovulate I've noticed my boobs start to hurt (I have no idea if this is normal or not and b-4 the shot I never had this b-4)

I hope some of this helps---and good luck if your TTC!!!!

Hi there. I was on the shot for about 4yrs. I was reading up some information on it and it says that it can take on average of 9-12 months from the last time you had the needle until you may become pregnant. It said that your periods may resume sooner than that but that your body may not be producing the eggs or ovulating so therefor you would not get pregnant. It said that most women take 6-8 months from their last injection before they start to ovualte. 44% become pregnant within 6 months and 76 % become pregnant within one year and 92% become pregnant within 2 years. I myself had my last shot in april/03 and we have not been using any birthcontrol since. The past few months my period has become regular and we have had sex during the times that i should be ovulating but nothing happened. I also was reading that some studies have been done and have shown that 65% of women can actually ovulate up to 3 times per cycle !! So i guess anytime is a good time.

I hope this information helps!

I was on 'the shot' for only 6 months before my DH and I decided the side effects were not acceptable (depression, mood swings, ect). For the time I was on depo provera I was getting my period regularly. I didn't stop getting it until 3 mos after I stopped. It took about 9 mos for my period to return, and nearly 2 years to ovulate again.

I don't mean to be a doomsayer, but I want to let you know that there is such a thing as depo provera related infertility that health care workers don't tell you about. They generally tell you that it could take you a year after stopping depo to be fertile again, but they don't mention that some women don't become fertile again on there own for much longer periods of time. My doc was going to start me on clomid the month I found out I was pregnant with my first child. However, there is a regime of oral progesterone (depo) that you can do for 3 mos that helps prime your body. Most docs try that (from what I've heard, not a doc here) before other things. I refused that option because of the depression with the shot.
