Umm, NOW WHAT?

Hello out there with (I hope) good advice!!!

I am engaged, was 5 days late for my period LAST month due to wedding planning stress, so when I was 3 days late THIS month, I took a test almost as a joke...and it was positive. So I took 2 more, both which were potivie...

NOW WHAT???

I moved and I had an appointment set up already for a check up with a new gyno in 2 weeks (which, as I figured out, would put me at 6 weeks pg already) and they refuse to see me earlier! I want to put my fiance and myself at ease by knowing FOR SURE. Am I behaving irrationally by demanding to find SOMEONE who will see me...TODAY? I'm just very nervous, excited, and I need to stop payments on some wedding stuff if this is the case, which I'm sure 3 tests aren't lying. Also, I want to start taking prenatal vitamins, etc.

Help Please?

Hi there! Well, first let me say CONGRATULATIONS!! :) And now that being said, you are not at all being crazy demanding to see a doctor sooner that 6 weeks. I do realize that 6-8 weeks is standard for when most drs want to see a pregnant woman, BUT I assume this is your first? So, you should be able to see someone sooner. I know I'd want to. Try calling them back and explaining that you realize they don't NEED to see you before then, but you're a little nervous, and would like to talk to or see someone sooner. I hope they'll be accomodating. In the meanwhile, definitely start taking those prenatals. I think you can buy them over the couter at Walgreens or CVS...if not, then just taking a regular multi-vitiman that has AT LEAST 400mg of folic acid will be ok until you see your doctor.

A lot of doctors don't see you before 10 weeks even. It's usually because they plan to do a vaginal ultrasound right away and they want to be sure you can see a heartbeat.

My doctor told me that if I had a positive HPT I was pregnant and to not think any different. I went to walgreens and bought over the counter prenatal vitamins and took those until I saw my doctor.

Waiting to see the doctor was torture but I was so excited to see our little "bean" right away that it was worth it, even though a vaginal ultrasound is a little uncomfortable. I'd find out if they are going to do one right away, that might explain why they wait.

Thank you for that reply! It is a bit relieving to know that my doctor isn't just "ignoring" me by having me wait a few weeks. And I'm also extra happy to know that they did just what you said, they scheduled me for a 9 week visit WITH an ultrasound. I am still in complete "surrealness" and the shock is turning into excitement each passing hour!

Thanks again, and congratulations to you! 16 days?!?! YAY!

Thanks for the congratulations! and for the advice that helped me feel not COMPLETELY insane or nervous! Yes, this is my first! It's actually a bit before we had planned on starting our family, just by about a year, but we both have really looked forward to when this time actually came...we just thought our wedding would have come first! Well, we will have a wedding, just not the wedding we'd been planning (it's next MAY - no longer at my "fighting weight" as I call it!). My fiance's being real sweet too, since we work together, he's being all nice by dropping off waters in my office whenever he walks by saying "Keep hydrated!". HEE HEE!

Thanks again!

Congratulations to you both! My second is due in February, and she was also a bit of a surprise. But my midwives didn't see me either pregnancy before week 10, so that's apparently standard. And from what I've seen, false positives on pregancy tests, even the drugstore variety, are EXTREMELY rare, so I'd guess you're in for an interesting nine months :-) Enjoy - being a mom is THE best. Truly.

And I'd recommend Peggy Vincent's _Baby Catcher_ and Gordon Churchwell's _Expecting: One Man's Uncensored Memoir of Pregnancy_ for some inspiring, and often quite funny, reading - for you AND your fiance.

Have you ever had a vaginal ultrasound before? If not remember to relax. It looks a bit like a big dildo (lol) and the doctor puts something that looks like a condom on it. It gets the lube stuff they use and then while you're laying down they insert it and move it around a little bit to get a good picture. You can't hear the heartbeat but you should be able to see it blip on the screen. Make sure you ask if they can print a picture for you, even though it's just a blob looking it's fun to have that as the first baby picture.

my doctors wouldnt see me until 8 weeks with both of my pregnancies but if we decide on another one I will be seen right away because of the health problems i had. i am a type 2 diabetic and hypothyroid in addition to pre eclampsia both times. good luck with your little surprise.
