Can you take it before you miss a period, or right after you have sex. My and my wife just got married, and had sex for the first time. We really don't want kids, but I have this feeling we might. She had just finished her period about 1 day before we had sex. What are the odds of conceiving? Can she take a test now and it be accurate? Help me, neither one of us knows much about all of this stuff.

Hi! It is a very slim possibility she could be pregnant . You normally ovualate around 2 weeks after a period it does vary from woman to woman and any time you have sex 5 days up to the day of ovulation there is a chance of pregnancy. She should wait and test at the time her period is do if you think its possible . Buy a test that detects 25 like a firstresponse early or a Answer early. How to know if your Ovulating? Check cervical fliud daily as Ovulation approaches it becomes more wet and abuntant and it will look like raw egg whites and you can stretch it 2 or more inchs without it breaking sometimes it will be very creamy and stretch but it will be plentyful around ovulation time after ovulation it becomes more dry . Are you guys using protection maybe you should or learn natural family planning to help you guys not to become pregnant untill your ready. Good luck !

Cogratulations on your new marriage. That being said I can only offer my general but by no means professional thoughts on conception. Generally a woman's cycle starts on the first day of her period, I think the average cycle length is anywhere between 21 and 35 days. Depending on the length and assuming it is regular every month she should ovulate in the middle of that cycle. If it so happens that you have unprotected sex during the middle of her cycle your chances of conceiving are the best than at any othe rtime but that does not mean a pregnancy is for certain. As for home pregnancy tests the absolute earliest and most sensitive tests could not give you a conclusive answer until at least 10 days after you have had sex. Blood tests from your doctor can show the presence of HCG(the pregnancy hormone the tests look for) earlier.

Like I said this is all very general and every woman's body is different so that is the best I can do.

As for the future if you guys plan on doing natural family planning, the women on this board seem to like the website www.fertilityfriend.com to monitor their individual cycles. It seems that with proper care and paying attention to your body it could provide more conclusive answers to an individual woman.

Hope this helps and good luck.

No, we didn't use protection. It was our first time, I didn't want to wear a condom, and she had heard that birth control causes many problems, plus, it is not what God intended. hehehe. I (parden the pun) pulled out before, so not much if any got in her, but since it was our first, we are terrified because we don't know all the ins and outs. Infact, after just speaking with her, she was still on her period. Would that make a difference?
