Why so many dpo to get a BFP?

Hello everyone. I have looked and looked through so many posts, almost to the point that I am driving myself crazy. I read so many posts that women didn't know until they were waaaaay late that they were pregnant and I don't understand why? When I called my OBGYN's office and also my Primary Care Physicians Office...they all give me the same answer...an HPT is very accurate if you are a week late. So why are there all these women that say otherwise? Also, all of my friends have had children and every last one of them say "oh I took a test 3 days after I was due and it came up positive" and 2 of them actually took the tests 3 days before they were due! I am just so frustrated! Am I the only one who is obsessing over my period being MIA?

I can't give you a lot of information...but here's one thing I do know: every woman, every cycle, and every pregnancy is very different. It's all part of a biological process and rarely can "biology" be predicted. HPT are very accurate, and have become increasingly more so in recent years. And, most women are able to achieve positive results within a week of missing their period if they are pregnant. Lot's of women trying to conceive, and many of the women around here, don't have regular periods (me included) and our cycles can vary from month to month. So, for example, mine ranges from 28 - 38 days, so I may think I'm "late" at the 29 day mark when I'm actually not....it's a longer cycle month and thus, it'll take longer to get a positve.
Now, on a side note. With my son, I took a test when I was five days late...it was negative. Then I tested three days later....positive.
With this pregnancy, I'm apparently only four weeks pregnant...which means I actually got positve hpt before I was technically "late". That's what I mean when I say it's "biology".
I don't know if any of that helps....have you had a blood test? If not, you might ask your dr for a beta hcg test, which should be definitive.
I know how frustrated and confused you must be...trust me, I've been there. I wish you the best of luck and send you tons of hugs.

I agree with Melissa. I know my cycles are wacky, and my Dr's office told me to test again in a week. All we can do is wait and see.
