Backwards Nickname

Drawing name chit-chat out of the scandalous headlines here! I read today that John Edwards's full name is Johnny. That means John -- the name by which he is primarily known -- is actually a nickname in his case. Weird, huh?

A lot of times we think that if someone is given the full name Katie or Jessie or Molly she can never go by Katherine or Jessica or Margaret. But why not?

How weird! Thanks for sharing!
And so true, why NOT go "backwards"???

Personally, I wouldn't choose a nickname to name my child (exceptions would be Molly because I see it as a given name not a nn or Jesse for a boy.)

But why not?

I'm thinking this supports my usual opinion that giving your kids childish given names is a good way of indicating that you don't ever really expect them to be an adult...and, in this case, boy howdy!

My mom is Peggy. Not Margaret. I don't know why grandma named her a diminuitive rather than the original.

My full name is Torie. It's not a nickname for Victoria, I never even thought of going by Victoria though, but I guess I could if I wanted to??
