Allison and Ashlyn

Ok, I've been lurking around for a while and you may have seen my posts.

I have a 4 year old DD named Allison Kathleen. We usually call her Allison or Allie.

We are expecting baby girl #2 and DH has FINALLY given me something to work with. He said he might be ok with Ashlyn Viola and for a nn we'd use Ash. This name was on the list because he had suggested Ashley first time around for Allison but I vetoed it because I've known too many Ashleys and they tended to be pretty snobby. I came up with the alternative Ashlyn this time around and he said he might be OK with that. He did flat out deny the traditional spelling of Aislinn and I'm OK with that because that would be SO much trouble going through her life correcting the pronunciation!!!

Anyway, now I'm wondering, are Allison and Ashlyn too similar?
Ashlyn would probably go by both Ashlyn AND Ash, just like Allison is both Allison and Allie.

But when scolding a child you HAVE to use the full name, not a nickname. But I was testing them aloud and they sound awfully similar....

What do you all think?

Allison and Ashlyn too similar?

I'm with Ellie...I would find it confusing on a daily basis.

That is exactly what I'm afraid of! It wasn't until DH said he might be OK with the name that I realized how similar they sound. I'd LOVE it if he'd agree on Annabelle which is a completely different sounding name but he hates it :( lol

If we can't come up with an agreement on anything else, I guess we'll just end up with Allison (or Allie) and Ash and just not call her Ashlyn very often.

When we make a final decision (ha it'll be Septenber when she's actually born I'm SURE!) I'll be sure to post again and let you all know what we decided on.

And I, too, wonder about how many names are chosen out of compromise and not because both (or even either!) parents are in LOVE with the name!!! lol Lord knows my first daughter would have been Anna or Alexandra if things had gone my way! That's part of bringing a child into the world as a couple though :)

I can't wait to hear what you finally choose. :)

Has your DD given any opinions on baby sister names?

My DD's opinion on the name is that we should call her Allison Kathleen.... I told her that she may like that idea now, but pretty soon she will HATE sharing the EXACT same name with her sister!!! haha

And there were multiple reasons why we couldn't use my first choice names first time around. Our last name is similar to Anderson or Andrews, so people gave me funny looks when I said I wanted to call her Anna... and for Alexandra, my other top choice, my sister named her son Alex 6 months before I gave birth AND she has a daughter named Alexis and that was just too many "Alex" names! lol

We have talked about possibly using the middle name as a first.

Funny thing - today he asked me "What are you naming your baby?" and I said "Ooooh! What am *I* naming MY baby??? Carys!" and he said "NO!" lol Then he proceeded to shoot down all my top names (as usual) so then I said Ashlyn and he said ".... did I agree to that one?" and I said "Yes! You said you'd be OK with it!" but since I'm so iffy on it and he (obviously) is too, it might change... but it's nice to have a stand by!

I really hope he eventually comes to like Carys enough to go with it.

I'm still throwing Carys out there! It's just too different for him I think. His family really doesn't like it either, but honestly, if I could convince him to go for it who cares what they think!!! LOL

I LOVE the name Kaitlyn, but since his cousin has a daughter named Kaitlyn and my sister is Katie (Kathryn) he says No.

I'm not big on Eliza, but Elizabeth is in the possibility pile. It was for Allison as well, but ended up being a definite NO because she shares a birthday with a girl we know named Elisabeth and we didn't want her to think we named our daughter after her!

Of your suggestions I like Anya, Adrienne, Ariel, Aubrey and Audrey. DH has shot all of them down. I also REALLY love Avery for a girl, but he hates that because he views it as a boys name only (whereas until recently I'd only heard it on girls!) He's just so picky lol He wants the "perfect" name but he doesn't have the patience to sit down and look. I got him looking at names for an hour or so one night and the only one he said he actually LIKED was Charlotte but I'm not huge on it.

And believe me, it frustrates ME to hear him shoot down everything! LOL

Caroline, it's so funny, my SO liked Charlotte too! I had it on my Loooooooong list, but I really don't like it THAT much. When I said it he was like "oh yeah, that's nice" and instead of being thrilled he actually liked something, I thought "oh no! don't like that one!" lol Same thing with Scarlett.

So frustrating. :) Lucky for me I'm not growing an actual baby yet. Good luck to you, poor thing!

I liked Elle's suggestion of getting him really comfortable hearing Carys. Throw it around alot (in your nicest prettiest tone of voice, lol).
