Unfortunately, there are some names that just don't resonate with most people.

Now you've gotten me curious! What is the name?

We didn't share our daughter's name until she was born, partially because it took us a long time to make up our minds, but also because we wanted some kind of surprise, we knew we were having a girl so it felt fun to have something to announce on the big day. But if you can't keep the secret, be firm and confident in your choice, if you say you're thinking about a certain name, people will always automatically give their opinion of it, good or bad, to help you decide. Most people tend to like popular names, that is why they got popular lol, so don't be put off by negative comments. I have had a few people say that at first they didn't like the name we picked (Ivyana) but now that she is here it suits her perfectly and now they really like it, because they love her. At the time we announced it we got only compliments and a few questions about pronunciation from the people we texted the news to. Nobody wants to insult your choice, they just don't know it is your choice yet because you come across so iffy about it. Just say, "we picked a name we love! It's ___________!!" - most people obody will not be rude after a statement like that. If they are, just accept it and move on. The important thing is that you and your DH love it.

I guess my problem is we weren't sure of it before when I told my friend and a few others it was one of the options. Now, we're sure. It's actually a name we picked out when I was pregnant with DS (before we knew he was a boy) and we just keep going back to it. DH says it was just meant to be, that picking out the girl name, we were just meant to have a little girl 2nd :) I'm sure we'll be more firm about it now that we have officially decided. DH even asked me if he could start referring to the baby by her name now, so I know it will come out and not stay a secret. I'll just have to say it just like you said Lauren. I really like that "we picked a name we love!" I do think that would help forestall cristism.

I agree with the pp - just say it with confidence - this is the name we chose and we love it and this is it.
I'm curious, too! What is it???

I've also had issues with this. I can't keep a secret and my in laws were asking what names I liked (since their son - my hubby - hates everything!)
And my top names: Carys and Everleigh both got "No" responses from them.
I told MY parents that we had been considering Ashlyn but opted against it because it was too similar to Allison in our opinions and they both said "No, it makes us think of the Ashland power plant."

So, I feel ya! I just shrug it off because this is MY kid and if we end up loving a name that everyone else doesn't love, so what? They'll get used to it.

We decided on November Riley, nn Ember or Emma depending on how I feel when she gets here. We've never been one to pick a name that's trendy or common, and I think thats just the problem :) People really didn't like DS's name either, Malcolm, but since it was a family name nobody ever said anything.

I kind of love that. It's not normally my thing, but maybe it's because November is my birth month, I don't know, it's just always seemed special. I love fall and thoughts of candles and colored leaves and anticipating Christmas. ;) I especially love Ember with it because it plays into the feeling of autumn, I think!

I remember when you posted a thread on this, I was one of those who said &go for it& and that I really like the idea, and the nn for it! Stick by it, but I know I could never keep a secret of a name choice... I am an open book, no matter how hard I try.
