B/G twins and ready to start naming!

We found out last week that our twins are a boy and a girl. Yay!! Now the hard part begins. We're pretty good for a girl. We've got a nice long list, middle name will be Virginia:

Malin (I'd say it's 90% sure this will be her name)
Freya
Linnea
Analina
Annika
...and there are others but those are the front runners I think.

Now, boys is where it gets tough. His first name will *most likely* be John, since it's family tradition and I've suddenly become okay with continuing it. HOWEVER, he will go by his middle name if we do that. If we end up with a name that starts with "p", then John will move to the middle spot, so DH and baby boy don't have the exact same initials. Our list so far (remember John is first in reality):

Theodore (nn Teddy, or I would use Teo in Spanish)
Thomas (nn Tucker)
Peyton (I know it's trendy but it's a family name--He would then be Peyton John, not the reverse)
...and now we're out.

DH's hesitation with Theodore is that my childhood best friend (whose family we are VERY close with and do Christmas with every other year) is Theodore John. He goes by TJ and always has. He's given me 100% permission to use Theodore as he doesn't want to. DH is leery since it's just TJ's name reveresed. It's the name I love more than any of the others. We're stuck. Help!!!

Let's see, I like Malin, Linnea and Freya best for a girl. I think Malin would be least likely to be mispronounced by the general public (which is about the only way I could help in deciding which of them to choose).

John Thomas is British slang for ... uh ... well, you can look it up for yourself (not work-safe): http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=john+thomas

Boy girls twins will be awesome!

Okay, onto the names-

Malin-You should probably just stick w/it. It's fantastic.

Freya-I like this almost as much, but I don't see any sense in messing w/Malin.

Linnea-This is nms. It kind of reminds me of a snobby old woman for some reason.

Analina-This is a bit too much.

Annika-This is okay, but sort of harsh.

Boys-

Theodore (nn Teddy, or I would use Teo in Spanish)-So handsome! John Theodore sounds great, & the nn Teddy is super fun. Actually though, I think w/Malin I prefer the nn Thatch.

Thomas (nn Tucker)-John Thomas nn Tucker is very handsome. I like this w/Malin too. You can't go wrong w/either, but I suppose that maybe this should take the front spot since your dh seems so uncomfortable w/Theodore.

Peyton-I can't get past the super trendy factor of people naming their child (boys & girls!) this after the football player...ugh.

Hope this helps!

I can only imagine that there are way more people called John Thomas then there are people (especially in the U.S) who knows that slang. Also, people still call their babies Peter.

Huh. I lived in the UK for 6 years and never came across that term. And I just checked with DH who is actually British, and he's never heard it either. Maybe it's regional? Anyway, I agree, probably perfectly safe for US use.

Having said that, I think I do prefer John Tucker. Having the first name/middle name switch is already something to have to explain, and the additional "stretchy" nickname just seems like more trouble than it's worth maybe?

I *love* John Theodore, but if it's an issue for DH, than maybe it's not the best pick. What is he pushing for? I think we need to get some more names added onto your list!

Malin all the way for the girl!

It's crazy that this is a boy *and* girl list and not a boy *or* girl list. You're having *two* babies - amazing!

Oh good Jodi, I thought I was crazy not knowing about this John Thomas business! Part of the reason we'd use Thomas and not Tucker, if we did it, is that Thomas is actually a family name on my side. Also, Tucker Kl--- isn't the best flow ever, so for more formal things he could be John Thomas Kl---. John Theodore just pulls at my heart though. DH actually really REALLY likes Theodore, he's just not sure about it being the reverse of my friend's name. He has no others that he likes more.

I really liked Thatcher too, but DH said it sounded more like a middle name. Hmm....maybe if it were John Thatcher he might go for it. He already nixed Emmett which made me sad.

I've always lived in the U.S., but I learned the John Thomas slang from the Monty Python song, "Isn't it awfully nice to have a _____"

Maybe you're right that nobody in the U.S. would have heard of this. But I think some people have. There was actually a professor at one of my colleges named John Thomas (Thomas was the last name), and he went by Jay instead of John. We used to giggle about it behind his back.

If you let me name your twins, they would be John Theodore (Theo) and Annika Virginia (nn Anni pronounced Ah-nee).
