Changing Baby's Name?

I posted on here quite a few years ago and was on another board, looking through my previous post and thought that I would post again about this.

We couldn't decide on an order for our youngest son's name Gavin John vs. John Gavin. My husband's name is John, his father's name was also John but he went by Jack and my husband is Johnny. Our older son is named after my father, like I always wanted. My husband didn't want our younger son's first name to be John, even though it was after his father who passed away when our older one was only a year old, because he wanted it to be after his father and not him. He also didn't feel right having the second son named after the father (he is the oldest of three brothers), and said that if I wanted to give one of our kids his name, then we should've named our older son John Paul (Paul being my father's name).

Before we left the hospital, I filled out the form for the birth certificate. My husband wasn't there, and I knew that he preferred Gavin John so I went with that as a last minute decision. However my husband is the only one that calls him Gavin. Pretty much everyone else calls him Johnny or Baby Johnny.

In my state we have the option to change his name without going through a whole process and the pretty substantial fee for a year from his date of birth. He doesn't have a passport or anything so it isn't a big deal.

My question is would you do it? He is now legally Gavin John and probably will be called Gavin in school and will eventually become Gavin, but for now he is Baby Johnny and it just feels right to all but his dad. Gavin is also a family name on my mother-in-law's side, since our older boy is named after my side of the family.

Thanks so much for your reply!

After thinking it over for a few days (in reality months, lol) and talking with hubby, I think we're going to change it to John Gavin. It just makes more sense with most of us calling him John and only him using his "real" name. Since he is Johnathan, baby will still be named after his dad like he wants!

We actually haven't gone about it yet, but from what I understand it isn't very difficult before 1 year and is free.
