They are both nice.
For some reason (I can't quite put my finger on it) I am really loving Hazel. I think maybe it's the 'trend' of 'old lady' (for lack of better term) names become more popular. Like Pearl, Mabel, etc. So now Hazel sounds modern, fresh, fun and a little spunky to me. Violet is nice but sounds boring to my ear, not really exciting or interesting. Sweet, demure, eh.
Definitely Violet. It has a more sweet and feminine sound to it. We are actually using a variation as DD#2's middle name - Viola - for my grandmother.Hazel is more harsh sounding to my ear. It also makes me think of nuts and old people.

I prefer Hazel...it's got a funkier, artsier sound to me (and I've had a little bias against purple since I was in junior high and that's what all the "cool" girls wore.
Lilac is one I have been working on getting on the list for a while.
