I think Leo is absolutely adorable! Such a fun name for a little guy. As to whether I like Leopold or Leonardo better it is hard. They are both handsome names, but emit such a different vibe then Leo - usually nn's have a similar vibe! I think Leonardo has so many things that will remind people of things - DaVinci and Ninja Turtles are the first the come to my mind. Whereas, I don't really have anything that pops into my mind with Leopold (except the title of the movie Kate and Leopold).
Sorry for the long, rambling response, but I think I like Leopold better!

So much of my answer to which name I'd prefer depends on the family, the names of the other children, etc.

When I think of Leonardo, I think of a family that embraces "ethnic" (for lack of a better word) names, and would expect the names of other children in the family to have a similar "ethnic" flair.

Honestly, to me they both feel a bit fussy unless you have cultural ties to either the Italian or Germanic communities. Personally, I find Leonardo more accessible because of Leonardo Di Caprio, whereas Leopold just conjures up Hugh Jackman in a really stiff military uniform for me. Of course, I'm a big fan of short-and-simple, so I'd probably lean towards simply Leo, myself.

I prefer Leopold. I have less associations with it--with Leonardo I think of the artist and of Leonardo di Caprio; some might also think of the mutant ninja turtles. Leopold I know is a German name, I think may have been a king, but I wouldn't be sure without googling it.
