What do you think

well we are far from done with the overall deciding of a name for this baby girl. But so far my "picky" (his term not mine) husband has only given the nod of approval to 3 names.

in his order Clara (or Claire), Elise and Penelope.

Here are my feelings:

Elise- my first choice of the 3 by far. Always liked this name but I am having a hard time thinking of a nick name. We have a niece named Eleanor who goes by Ellie and I fear other that 'Lise there isn't much left for nick names....and I do not want to leave it to the whim of my family.

Clara- I can't decide if I like Clara or Claire more. I think someone on here mentioned feeling like Claire is such a middle name now....it's lost a lot of it's 'power' as a first name. I feel much the same. It's a beautiful name, but I just don't know if it's got enough "umph" (for lack of better word) to be a first name. Clara is also wonderful - my only thought on it is that it's such a short sounding name (DH,DD and I all have longer multi-syllable names).

Penelope- I like the name, not as much as the other 2 but it's a longer name and there is good potential for nick names. The nick names do bring up a small issue though I don't like Penny and Hubby isn't sold on Pippa which in my mind leaves Nell/Nellie. I love Nell, but with our niece Ellie...I worry it would be to similar.

So I turn to you mavens of naming
- what do you think of the choices overall (with Adeline for a sibling)
-nick name suggestions for Elise? and what do you think of the Nell nick name with our niece.
-any other suggestions along these lines you think my hubby might go for?

After this is settled it's on to "just in case" boy names *laughs*

thanks ladies!

Elise is a lovely name. If you used a "V" middle name (Victoria, Violet, Veronica), you could use "Evie" (from the initial E.V.) as a nickname. Lise or Lisie is the only other obvious choices.

I like Claire though, obviously, nicknames are limited. If you went with a "C" middle name (e.g., Claire Cecilia), you could use "Cece" - again from using the initials of the names.

Penelope doesn't seem as a good a fit as the others. And some of the nicknames just aren't appealing.

Here are some other names that I think are what you're looking for. Maybe you'll find something that appeals to you and to DH?

Camille (NN Cammie)
Cecilia (NN Cece or Celia)
Cristina (NN Cris, Crissy, Tina)
Elena/Helena (NN Laney)
Emilia (NN Emme, Lia)
Francesca (NN Frankie)
Genevieve (NN Genny, Evie)
Lucinda (NN Lucy or Cindy)
Natalie (NN Nat)
Melinda (NN Mel, Mindy)

Lise- I am actually Danelle (no 'i' in my full name).
Funny thing is my husband and I were trying desperately to avoid anything similar to our names (I mean the whole Dan and Dani thing got played out to death in my book) so we avoided all D names and when we found Adeline didn't even realize that it was similar in spelling (how sad is that?!) we just loved the sound of it so much we didn't stop to think about the similarities!

Lori-Ann-

I don't know that Claire would have a nick name....other than a made up one. the name itself might be a nick name for Clara (which is why I lean toward that name more than Claire)

The suggestion for Evie for Elise is great, sadly my good friends daughter is Evelyn (Evie) so it's out. I'm ok with Lise or Lisie....something like that....

thank you for the other suggestions I will run them by the picky man and see what he thinks

things are so hard time time around!

Hi Dani! Some thoughts on the three names you mentioned:

1. I love Penelope. I know you and your DH have opinions on the nicknames, but I think all of those nicknames are adorable (Penny, Nell, Nellie, Pippa).

2. I don't think Nell and Ellie is too bad of a combination for cousins. Nellie and Ellie is a bit much, but I don't think it's horrible. I think Nell and Ellie is about the same, confusion-wise, as Ellie and Elise.

3. I think Claire is becoming seriously overused. I personally know three Claires between 0 and 14 months, and one with middle name Clara. On the message boards, I see it all over the place as a middle name and pretty commonly as a first name, too. I would not be at all surprised to see this name hit the top 10 in the next few years (Claire is already #53).

More suggestions:
Juliet
Cecelia
Josephine
Beatrice
Victoria
Genevieve
Marjorie

Good luck!
Jadzia

thanks for the input Jadzia.

Beatrice and Cecelia have already gotten the veto.
Josephine was our second choice with Adeline, but this time around I haven't gotten an answer on it (which usually means I'll get the "I *want* to like it response)
Gwendolyn got a veto so I'm thinking Genevive will as well, but who knows

We know a Marjorie and a Victoria and sadly both have some pretty crazy tendencies *laughs* so I don't think either of those will be used.

I'll keep plugging along making my list and seeing what comes of it!

I did the 'call the names out the kitchen door test' and I liked the sound of "Adeline, Penelope......"

Well I'm biased because my youngest is Penelope AND my oldest is Eleanor :)

I like Elise but it seems very 60s/70s to me when Adeline is more 1910s/1920s vibe-retro cool. Can't think of any nn that don't come close to Ellie sound

Clara is a go to classic but seems more "plain Jane" next to Adeline's sparkle.

Penelope is a good fit & Nell isn't too close to a cousin Ellie. My girls nn are Ella & Penny.

Others that I think fit with Adeline-sorry for any repeats:
Hazel
Lucinda-nn Lucy or Lulu
Florence- nn Flora or Flossie
Millicent- nn Millie or Mimi
Harriet nn Hattie
Emilia/Amelia nn Mia or Mimi
Frances nn Fran or Frannie
June/Juniper
Helena- nn Lena
Magdalena nn Lena
Imogen- Genny
Antonia-

Keylyn-
Lili (or other spelling variations) is cute! thanks for the suggestion!

I actually suggested Clarice/Clarissa first and both got the veto so I went with Clara or Claire (picky really is a good word for him!)

If we choose to go with Penelope I think we'll just have to deal with the Nellie/Ellie issue as it comes. Unless I can get hubby on board with Pippa or something else. I really like Nell(ie) so I'm willing to put up with the confusion during the times we're with the in laws. They are so set on calling Adeline by her nick name (yes we go with Addie....I figure she'll be one of a few Addie's but most likely the only Adeline in a group).
I try and compensate by calling her Adeline more, especially when they are around...it's a thing for me since I have been Dani since day 1 and never really grew into my full name (or had the opportunity to try it out). I just want my girls to have options :0)

Andi- I love seeing all the lists people come up with because so many of the names were already in my mind! Guess I really do have a "style" *laughs*

Lucinda is out as that is my MILs name
Magdalene,Hazel, Imogene, June and Helena have all been vetoed (*insert sigh here*)
Amelia- has been my list topper for many months but I just can't get him on board with it. I think he'd go along with it...but he doesn't LOVE it ya know?

thanks again for the input ladies- it really is helping!

"Amelia- has been my list topper for many months but I just can't get him on board with it. I think he'd go along with it...but he doesn't LOVE it ya know?"

Having named 5 kiddos I can tell you-IMO-you never really LOVE the name the way you loved the 1st name you picked until the baby is here & BECOMES the name. And if you think you can get DH on board I'd keep Amelia in my back pocket & keep looking.
