Avaya as a girl's name?
- I heard the name Avaya the other day and really loved it. It's a
- telecommunications company but I just think it sounds so beautiful.
- Yes, Avaya would be a pretty name for a girl.
- Avaya would be an OK name for a girl.
- Avaya would not be a good name for a girl but it might work for a boy.
- Please don't name any of your kids (boy or girl) Avaya! :-)
You will be able to change your vote.

I was looking for the "Please don't name your child after ANY company or product!" option but there wasn't one. ;)

Kelli, that is so funny! :-)
However, what if I had said, "Avaya is a name from Peruvian Native Americans, and my great-grandmother is from Peru ... what do you think of this name?"
You might have believed me, right? :-) I just think it's such a beautiful sounding name, despite the fact it's the name of a telecommunications company. In fact, when I first saw the building with the name Avaya on it, I said to my husband, "Avaya ... wow, that is so beautiful. I wonder what type of business that is?" I was thinking it was organic hemp clothing or something! Imagine my disappointment when I looked it up on line and found it was about phones! I haven't brought it up as a baby name possibility to my husband, I'm sure he will think I've gone mad!
I just asked my husband, "What do you think of Avaya as a girl's name?" He looked up at me and said, "Why do you want to name our daughter after a brand of bottled water?"
Too funny! I'm not sure what water he's thinking about ... but I give in, it probably does sound like a corporate name.
You're right, I might have believed you (although I may have looked it up LOL). ;)
I'm not saying it doesn't sound pretty, just that I'd personally avoid using a name that I knew ahead of time was also the name of a company or product. That's just too much baggage, IMO. For example, I think that Avalon is a beautiful name, but unfortunately Toyota thought so too. ;) Sure, I could name my child that anyway and tell her to ignore the car jokes, but I'd rather she didn't have to. Besides that, what if there was a problem inherent to that particular automobile and it eventually became the next Gremlin? It just wouldn't seem as nice a name with that association.
That's the problem with names like this ... you just never know what a company or product could become notorious for. Not that Enron would make a pretty name but if it did and someone had used it for their baby knowing about the company (but probably assuming many people wouldn't), think how that name would be viewed now. It is forever linked to scandal because of that company.
Product names also carry certain connotations, like if you were to name your child Evian or Prada, many might assume you had wealthy aspirations, were snobbish and/or were so "out of the loop" that you made up something you thought sounded nice without even knowing it was a recognizable product, KWIM?
That's all I was trying to say. ;) However, if it's the sound you like, you could try searching for names beginning with Av- or something like that and probably come across another that you liked just as much (and that your husband would be more likely to get on board with LOL).
Here's a link to just such a search, but you can do it on most sites (or just start at Av- in a name book). http://www.behindthename.com/php/search.php?terms=av*&nmd=n&gender=f&operator=or Avila seems the closest in sound, but there's also Aveline, Avra, Avril, etc. ;)

ETA: Just read your husband's "bottled water" comment and cracked up. ;) I'm guessing he's thinking of Evian and thought it was funny since I just mentioned it above.

I read all the responses, so I guess you're not going to actually use Avaya. ;-) It does have a very pretty sound, though.
