Just to clarify pronunciation.

Hughan 'hyoo-en'

Gowan 'g-oww-en'

I'm familiar with Gowan, but every time I've said it aloud it's come out sounding like I stuttered through the word "gown," KWIM? ;)

Hughan seemed new, and I actually do like it (it did GMV). Then I realized it sounded almost exactly like Ewan -- which I quite love -- so I'd still prefer that. Of course, if someone were going for a more-obvious route to the nn Hugh, the Hughan spelling would make perfect sense. I do like it quite a bit, actually.

You have a way with names and thinking they sound like something else. Must be that wacky personality, lol. ;)

I'm really liking Hughan, too. It does sound a lot like Ewan, another spelling could be Hewan but I liked Hughan that much more. I do like Ewan but really don't want another E name. Ethan and Ewan is very close, especially the spelling. Gowan Porter has been "THE" name for months now but Gowan rhymes with the beginning of our last name. It didn't bother me at first because I loved the name so much but it's been slowly bugging me more and more. Plus, I posted this on another site and I think everyone thought it was pronounced like Rowan, echh. I still do love it but I may have to give this one up. :( Ah well, on to bigger and better... :)

Don't you hate when a name you love just doesn't work with your ln? With ours, anything beginning with an M, ending with a K or containing a too-prominent -ick, ck/k or -ora sound is pretty much out, but so far we've been able to work around it.

You're right about my wacky personality, btw. I know no one (else) in their right mind would likely get the same impression I do when it comes to names sounding like other things ... it's just something I can't get past for myself. And it's funny, because there are so many of them! Luckily, there are dozens of other names I do love that don't present any "sounds-like" problems for me. LOL

It's nice to hear someone else say they actually like Ewan (I've been surprised how many seem to dislike it!), but I totally agree with avoiding another E name. I actually just meant to say I love Ewan so much, I'd personally use it over Hughan, but for you I think Hughan is incredibly nice! ;) It's not too matchy, it's got your -an ending, it's got a good nn (if you want to use it), etc. No negatives, really. ;) Oh, and I definitely prefer the Hughan spelling as well, btw. Hew just doesn't have the same appeal for some reason. I'd vote for Hughan in a second, though. ;)
