I couldn't figure out what was bothering me about these combos right away, but I think it's because both Gage and Zane end in hard consonent sounds, and the A-beginning mns really chop them up, making them sound like Gay and Zay instead when said as the full name. The worst one IMO was Gage Asher, which when said aloud sounds terrible close to Gay Basher (a term most are familiar with and that is not a good association at all ... which is unfortunate because seperately these two are probably my favorites). In fact, I do want to say I like a lot of the names! Just not sure how well they work together. What I'm trying to say is, when the names are said, they sound more like this:
Gage Azlin - Gay Jazlin
Zane Azlin - Zay Nazlin
Gage Aiken - Gay Jaiken
Zane Aiken - Zay Naiken
Gage Asher - Gay Jasher
Zane Asher - Zay Nasher (probably the combo that bothers me least in this respect)
Gage Amir - Gay Jamir
Zane Amir - Zay Namir
KWIM? Seperately I like a lot of these though (in fact, I love both Gage and Zane!), so please don't think I'm bashing the names themselves. Just something you might want to be aware of. ;)

OMG!! You know, after reading your reply a couple of times I started to think about it. And I wish to thank you for your take on the names. We are having such a hard time with boys names, and we don't even know if we need one until next week. But I never thought of the names running together like that and I am glad to have it pointed out. Especially the Gay Basher one, my brother is gay and I saw what he went through in school and if kids figure out that name has that sound, forget about it. My son would be put through unnecessary torture. It gave me another perspective when choosing names, and I am so happy you responded. It was a huge help.
So no, I didn't think you were bashing the names. I am up for any and all opinions. Girls names for us are so easy to come by, but I feel we have to be more careful with a boys name. I want it to be strong, different, but not a torture device for his school years. And like I said, I shouldn't even be stressing right now since I don't yet know if it is a boy or a girl. But hey, I am a pregnant woman! I am allowed, right? LOL
Thanks again!

Oh good! I always hate writing anything that could be seen as negative but figure it's something you'd want to be aware of before choosing a name (instead of figuring it out later when he's in school, as you mentioned). Like I said, I actually really like both fns. Is there a reason it has to be an A mn, or did it just turn out that way? I think a mn starting with a consonent would work well with either, because you'd have less of a chance of them running together at all. Luckily, you won't have to worry about it too much until next week (I know how hard it is to wait! LOL). Of course, since girl names come so easily for you you're pretty much assured this will be a boy (LOL) ... always seems to happen that way. ;)

Actually, since our dd initials are Z-A, my husband wanted to try a Z-A for a boy too. Or a A - Z combo, which is hard for me to come up with for a boy, but we have one for a girl. The Gage name is one we picked during our first pregnancy and we liked it, so that middle name doesn't have to be anything in particular. I don't care about the names being matched, or all coming from the same initials or anything. So I figured I would try to come up with something for the Z - A for a boy. I love the name Zane and always have, but if we have a boy and decide on it then we do have to find something else for a middle. Any suggestions? I could always use help! But I think after bringing this to my dh attention, he will agree without argument. But I think I should just wait it out and see if I need a boys name, and you are right I probably will. LOL
Thanks again.
