"Can you spell that?" Our last name is difficult to spell, so should we...

  • choose a first name with common spelling
  • choose a frist name we love even if the spelling is tricky

Gosh. It's really hard to say w/o knowing the actual names. A lot of times it just depends on the name, ya know?

Why don't you do a poll on the name in question and ask if it *is* too difficult to spell? It may be more recognizable than you think. Either way, unless you are extremely concerned about it, I would use the name. You love it, so why settle for something else out of convenience?

I'd stick with an intutively spelled name, myself. My last name's MacKenzie and my daughter will forever be telling people "M-a-c" just as I have to,(not that big a deal but still bugs me...) so when looking for a name for her, I tried to pick something that not only appealled to me look & sound wise but was spelled only one way (or names that were only standard spellings.. such as Sophia, India, Lily etc.) I ended up choosing Josephine. Not only do I get lovely compliments on her name but I never have to spell it for anyone. Even the 18 year old receptionist at the Dr.'s just writes it out.. nary a question! :)

Of course, I found a name I truly loved above all.. if the name you adore is not easily spelled.. you could try looking for variants of it that may appeal just as much. Otherwise, I'd follow Jorie's suggestion of polling the name!

Good Luck!
