This is our first girl and cant decide. My husbands name is Emil (we call him Tony) so everyone really like the idea of Emily Ann (my m/n is Ann). But I cant get past it being the most popular name since 1995. We also like Abigail. This was going to be our names for our two sons had they been girls. I like the fact that we can shorten the name and call her Abby. Both sons have names that we can shorten. Any advice?

Thanks

I love the fact that you are honoring your husband for your daughter's name. Since both names are popular, I would agree with pp that you should pick the name you love best. Sounds like Emily has the most meaning to you ... so I would go with that!

Here are some other suggestions as well (sorry for any repeats):

Emilie
Emilia
Emiliana (this one accommodates both your husband's name and your middle name)
Emmeline (can't remember the correct spelling??)
Emma

First, both names are beautiful and classic. Have you thought about keeping Emily and changing the spelling? Emileigh, Emmmaleigh, Emilee, Emmalie, I like the name Emersyn(lots of ways to spell it) and using the nn Emma/Emily. Love both names though you have a hard choice ahead of you. I had a good friend in school her name was Emily and we called her Emi/Em

Abigail is almost as popular as EMily if you consider all the massacred misspellings of it! Just something to consider since popularity was an issue for you with Emily. I hear Abigail/Abby EVERYWHERE!

Personally, I would go with a less popular name that is derived from or based on Emil. My favorite is Emmeline. Emiliana is OK, too. I'm less crazy about Emilia, but only because I hear Amelia so much lately. If you go with Abigail, which is pretty but also very popular, perhaps you could use a less popular nickname than Abby, such as Gail or Ailie. Good luck with you decision!
