Chip as a nn for IV?

  • Love it - a great nn for a son with same name as dad!
  • Like it
  • OK
  • nms
  • Terrible
  • Juvenile
  • Pretentious
  • Like it on its own as a given name
  • Don't like it but it's better than calling him same name as dad

I found it difficult to vote. It's not so much the nickname that bothers me (though it does remind me of Chip, the broken teacup in Beauty and the Beast), but rather, the tradition of carrying on a name for a hundred years. To me, that's pretentious, not the nickname. I am hoping and praying that I don't marry someone who wants to carry on his exact name (since I'd never dream of giving a daughter my exact name), but if by some awful chance I do marry such a man, and if he somehow brainwashes me into agreeing, I guess I'd call my son Ford, which is the traditional nickname for the IV (like Tripp or Trey for III or Quint for V). Ford sounds quite a bit more adult, and less "nicknamey" than Chip. It also sounds a little more like the name of a bank CEO and less like the name of a car salesman.

My dh is part of a long tradition of having the same name passed from father to son and I like it.

ooooh I like Ford WAY better, good suggestion. I am actually reading a book right now and one of the children is Ford. In the book he is named that because his father owns a few Ford dealerships in Alabama!

Well I don't really like using the exact name of the relative. I prefer using a varient,my DF and I are naming our son Bryson(DF is Bryan). I think thats better than naming the kid "whatever whatever JR."

I couldn't decide which way to vote. Could you post the actual name, so we can see if there are any nicknames that derive from it that maybe haven't been used in a few generations? My DS has a friend (they're 7) who is a IV, and his mom decided against Ford (and possibly other traditional 4th nicknames) in favor of Robbie (his name is Robert something something). It's not original, but Robbie hadn't been used by the men in that family for several generations, so it became "his" name alone. The father goes by Trey, BTW. So at first glance, the father, son, and even grandfather (Bob) have completely different names. Of course, not so on legal documents, mail, etc.

Just a thought. For what it's worth, if my DH had a name tradition in his family that had lasted to 4 generations, I would not be the in-law (wife) to ruin it! Good for you for supporting it! There will be lots of options for your son's familiar name.

To get back to Chip, it's NMS. It sounds like it's from the 80s to me, and very preppy. I prefer Ford, if it comes down to those two. But with a full first and middle name to harvest from, surely there are other nn options. I'd even prefer initials to Chip, like J.R. or something (how's that for 80s?!)
