Completely torn - need some help on name choice

  • Ally
  • Alyssa
  • DH and I decided on the name Alyssa, but we have been calling her Ally as her nn
  • We love the nn Ally and are thinking of using it instead of Alyssa.
  • Which do you prefer??

Ally is a nickname, and no more than that IMO. I would definetly go with Alyssa and call her Ally so she will have more options.

I think it's great you love her nn, but by naming her Alyssa (as you'd planned anyway), she'll have the option of using either as she ages and her tastes and personality change. On the other hand, if you change your mind and just use the nn Ally as her given name, it's pretty safe to say she could never use Alyssa, KWIM?

As an Alison who goes by Allie, I strongly encourage you to name her Alyssa. Ally really is just a nn rather than formal name. I don't like nicknames as first names because it limits the child's options in the future.

I differ from the majority on this one. I voted for Ally. I generally do not like nn (when used almost exclusively) derived from formal names. The name Ally (actually sp. Allie) has been used as a given name in the US since the Pilgrims landed. It also seems to be your favored choice, which is important. Of course, using Alyssa would give her a "longer" option but not necessarily a more formal one, IMO. Alyssa sounds younger than Ally, and quite prissy.

Ally is fresh, hip, and blissful. She'll blend right in with all the Rubys, Lilys, Maggies, Mollys, Ellys, Annies, and on and on. In fact, I prefer Ally!

I really like the name Allie, but I don't like it spelled Ally. Ally is ally (al-eye), as in a war ally. And lots of people spell it Alley, as in alley cat. I really only like Allie, but I definitely think it's a cute, spunky name that ages well. I also like it as a nickname for Allison and Alice. I don't care for Alyssa (bad associations for me); I prefer just Allie.

Edited to add that I completely agree with Ginger: Alyssa may be longer, thus rendering Allie a nickname, but Alyssa sounds very much less formal and sophisticated to me. I think I'd rather be a 40 year old Allie than a 40 year old Alyssa. Mostly because I'm pretty sure I'd despise being called Lyssa or Lissy at any age. But that's just me.

Let us know which one you pick!

Well, I'd rather be a 40 year old Allison.

Ally is too cutesy for a grown woman, in my opinion. My name is Alison, and my Dad calls me Ali, but I have to say I think it's a little odd when grown women introduce themselves this way. Give her a serious name to use, too. By the way, the nn Ally is pretty popular (along with Ellie.)
