I think it's a bit of a stretch, b/c the initial sound of the name and the nn is different (a long "a" as opposed to a short "a"). However, I DO kind of like the idea of combining sounds from the first and middle names to form a different nn.
For example, if Adelaide was pronounced AY-deh-lade, I might suggest Adelaide Valentina. Then Ava for a nn would make sense to me, b/c it's the "Ay" sound from the first name (if it was pronounced that way) and the "-va" from Valentina...
Just some other thoughts for a nn for Adelaide: Adele, Della, Dee?
I agree that Ada or Addie would be the most likely nns for Adelaide.
If you want to name your daughter a name that could be shortened to Ava, how about:
Avery or Avalon?
