I like Millie but dont like Mildred at all. How about compromise and use Mildred as a middle name? or just call her Millie. Good Luck.

I kind of agree with the last post. I would either come up with a compromise, such as using Millie or some other similar name that could be shortened to Millie (it's still honoring her, after all), or just use it as the middle name, which is just as nice.

I like Millie, but not Mildred, what about using the nn Millie, with a different full name, such as, Emily/Emilie, Emilia, Mila, Camil, Camille, Camilla, Emmaline/lyn/lina, Millicent, or even as a full name, but if you don't like Mildred, then definitely don't use it

Do not do that to your child! My mother is Mildred and she hates it, she goes by her middle name. My grandmother is Mildred and goes by a nickname (her nickname is Booty LOL). My great-grandmother is Mildred... not sure what she went by as I never knew her. My grandmother's sister got the best name of the Bunch, she was Madeline. Another sister was Myrtle (get the naming scheme here?)

The BEST thing my mom could have done for me was to break the tradition. Trust me she got hell for it from the family but she did not name me Mildred. Thank goodness.

My mom's reaction to my brother's wife name (my brother's wife's name is Mildred) was Oh my gawd... not another Mildred... I hate that name. Brother's wife goes by Mildred by she is also Filipino and it's a totally different naming culture there.

Ok, I'm definitely the lone lover of Mildred on this board! I happen to like the sound of it, even if it doesn't look very graceful. If you're looking for an accepted varaint (so everyone knows you're honoring Mildred even if the name isn't quite the same) a previous poster mentioned Millicent, which is a variant I think is ripe for use. It looks prettier than Mildred and is more lyrical sounding (no 'D's" to clunk it up). I also think the nickname Millie is just gorgeous!

Look on the bright side, at least everyone will know how to pronounce Mildred or Millicent and hardly anyone will spell them wrong! :)

Well, that's my 2¢! Good Luck!

I voted that it's ok, but to be honest, like you, I'm not a big fan of Mildred. The nickname Millie, however, is ADORABLE! Cute, cute, cute, and a little quirky. Would you and your husband consider the name Millicent instead? I think Millicent is an utterly charming, under-used, old-fashioned name, and not so tough on the ears as Mildred. You could still say the name choice was in honor of his grandmother.

I didn't read the other posts, so sorry if I am repeating someone else's suggestion.

I'm sorry, I dont' think Mildred is has a pretty sound at all. I think it sounds a little harsh, kind of like Brunhilda or Gertrude.

I think there are alternative to Mildred, however, especially since Millie is such a cute nickname!

...What about the name Millicent? Or Millisande? (I know, it's typically spelled Melisande, but at least with the alternative spelling you'll get the "Mill-" sound for the nn Millie). Or maybe alter Mildred to make it sound a little prettier...maybe something like Mildreda (mil-DRAY-da) or Mildrena (Mil-DREE-na, Mil-Drey-na)...

If DH is dead set on Mildred and will not agree to altering it, I would suggest using it as a middle name only. I just think it's too unflattering for it to be a throwback name. I do like the idea of using family names, but when it has such a harsh sound, I'd suggest using a variation of the name.

best of luck to you!

Thanks so much for all the replies. I loathe the name and would be hesitant to even use it as a middle name. DH asked me to post it here becasue he believe I was cuckoo and that the rest of you would think it was lovely, unusual, quaint, whatever.

I'm not going to alter it, I think that I just need to talk him out of it somehow. Or maybe just think masculine thought so we can have a boy and not worry about it!
