I think it sounds feminine as well and wondered what everyone else thinks. Good idea about spelling it Darnelle. I like that. I also like the name Nell which I never thought about but that's probably because I'm not one for nn's. :)
This one doesn't sound feminine at all to me, but that may have to do with the very large man named Darnell I knew. He had a slow, southern drawl, so his name came out more like Dar-nayil (no idea how to type that pronunciation, but I'm guessing someone southern could help LOL).
I get the whole "ends in -ell, sounds like a girl name" thing, but to be honest, even with the Darnelle spelling, I just see Darn, Elle. So not my favorite. ;)
I love it as a girl's name but I would probably add an 'e' on the end to remove any doubt.

Terra.
Looks like we're in the minority, judging by the vote.

Feminine, huh? I see large 40-something Black man...
I know a Darcel who goes by Darcy, and a Darcelle, who is an old drag queen. Both of these seem more feminine to me.
hehehe You must have know the same Darnell I did. ;)
