Do you like the name River (girl)?

I keep going back to this name...I really like it for a girl. I just think it has a very feminine sound to it - or perhaps it's the association with the "Firefly" series (one of the character's names is River). At any rate, what do you think about this name? Also, do you think it goes well with the sib name Lorelei?

I love River for a girl. I think it's really charming. However, I think it is one of the worst sibling matches for Lorelei that you could make. In germanic mythology, sirens on the River Lorelai lured sailors to their deaths. I would really avoid that combo.

For some reason I think of River as more masculine. But if you really like it I think you should go with it. We really wanted to name ds#4 Lake but chickened out & now we regret it.

I've only heard River on a boy but it could work well on a girl. I like it either way. Although Lorelei and River IMHO don't "go" together but its really not that big of a deal.

If it's the name you keep going back to, then use it. However since you're asking other people's opinions, I really don't like it, although I LOVE Lorelei.

It's nms, but has a very masculine sound to me. I think it might have to do with the -er ending.

I know there ARE feminine names ending in -er (Summer, Amber, Jennifer, etc.), but it is a LOT more common an ending for male names (Alexander, Archer, Asher, Bridger, Carter, Christopher, Cooper, etc. ... and that's just A-C LOL). Looking at some of these, it kind of makes sense an -er ending would make me assume boy, since there are quite a few names, like Alexander and Christopher, for example, that use -er as a masculine form and a different ending, such as -ra, -ria, -tine or -tina, as a feminine version. Hope some of that made sense. LOL

On a side note, I don't think Lorelei and River would be a good sib set. Kind of too "oddly" matchy, KWIM?

Please NO, don't do this! The poor girl would live her life explaining the reason she was named this...which was what again? Sorry to be blunt, but I think it is terrible!

No. It's definitly a boy name, & pairing it next to the super girly Lorelei would be a crime.

I just think it's a very pretty name. And if a name automatically conjures up thoughts of prettiness for me, I usually consider it a girly name. I couldn't bear to name my son River - it's just too feminine sounding - like Summer or Heather.

The only reason I wanted to know if it went with Lorelei is because that's another name we're considering, which I'm still in love with. I probably wouldn't use them for sib names, though. I agree that they don't sound good together.

I don't hate it, but I don't exactly like it either.

I can't get away from the association I have with this name and River Phoenix, so I see it as a boys name... wouldn't use it for a girl. I'd probably go with another name that actually means "river", which could be interesting... :-)
Good luck!
