I keep going back to this name...I really like it for a girl. I just think it has a very feminine sound to it - or perhaps it's the association with the "Firefly" series (one of the character's names is River). At any rate, what do you think about this name? Also, do you think it goes well with the sib name Lorelei?

I think River is a beautiful name for a girl. I definitely know what you mean about the name conjuring up a "pretty" image. Lorelei is pretty, too. And if they were sibling names I think it would be a nice match for sisters :)
Good luck!

I already replied concerning the name itself, but I just read your reason for liking River as a feminine name and had to ask ... have you ever been to, swam in, or lived near a river, by any chance??

Don't get me wrong, I love nature, and even many nature names, but most rivers I've come across (hehe pun intended I suppose) wouldn't generally conjure up "thoughts of prettiness," KWIM? Powerful. Sure. Majestic. Certainly. But rivers aren't exactly dainty, trickling streams, if that makes sense. They're usually large, forceful, rushing and, often, quite dirty (sadly). So while the name for you might bring to mind a beautiful, natural spring of some sort, many people will find the water quite a bit murkier.

I MUCH MUCH MUCH prefer Lorelei if you had to choose between them.

River is a boy's name, although not the "toughest"-sounding one. Like another poster, reminds me of River Phoenix, that will be the case for most of our generation I would think.

If you are looking for a nature-sounding name that is similar to River but more "girly" how about:

Raven
or
Rowan?
