I voted a little. I think it is a wonderful name with a wonderful meaning, but it is nowhere near my typical style, so I could never pull it off.

Good Luck!!

No, honestly, every time I hear cadence used as a name I think of some of the more "colorful" Marine marching/running cadences of which I've heard. If you know anyone who has ever been in the military, ask them if they can share any with you. Ask especially if they know any risqué ones, if you want to see why I don't care for the name.

Cadence is also a musical term, meaning a pause, or hesitation that marks the end of a phrase or section of music (with this meaning, it's easy to see how the term was applied to military running songs). If you're looking specifically for a musical name, I can think of many more that have more beautiful meanings than that -- harmony, melody, aria, adagio, cantata, etc.

Not trying to offend anyone who likes this word as a name. I just wanted to point it out to those who may be unaware of its meaning.

Jen

I just wanted to tell you that I personally love the name. I have a niece named Cadence, and she gets complemented on her name all the time.

I have a friend who named her last little girl Cadence ( a beautiful little girl) . I think the name is lovely. They call her Cadie for short. The name just fits her so well. I say go for it! Tonya

I think the name is okay. I don't love it, but I certainly don't hate it!!! I don't know why, but in a way, I think I prefer Cadenza. (Cah-DEN-za) And I don't know why that is, b/c I think it has a bit of a "harsher" sound than Cadence does. I guess I like that Cadenza ends in "a", lol.

Well, best of luck to you, and if you like Cadence, go for it! It's cute! :-)

You have a point, maybe my strong negative associations are because I WASN'T in the military.

The ones I was told by military friends/relatives may not even be used in the military these days, probably more Vietnam era when there were fewer women enlisted. Or maybe they were never official, but rather more naughty, unofficial versions. The ones I heard were pretty raunchy, and degrading of women, etc., and that has always stayed in my mind, and colored my impressions of the name. If you go to Google and type in "offensive cadences" and click around on the top links that come up, you'll see ones similar to what I heard.

So while I still wouldn't use the name myself, for that reason alone, if others without that association like the name, that's their opinion and they're entitled to it just as I am to mine!

I'm sorry, I was not meaning to come off as harsh in my post, that was not my intent.

I am a musician, and cadence to me just conjures up many hours of practicing cadences/cadenzas...in piano concertos, etc! It sounds the same as naming a kid Coda, Chord, or Staff to me. :-)

So I wouldn't do it for my kid, but I can't say it would bother me to hear it on another person! I do think the nn Cadie is cute.
