Neither. It's a surname, imo.

its a surname being used as a first name and has an obvious feminine nn..(Emmie) ergo it is unisex...

Well, these days, I would use it for NEITHER. Here's why:

1. I agree with the poster that said it seems like a last name. I would always have thought of this name as a last name. On a whim, I would agree that it could go fine for a boy.

2. months and months ago, you should have seen how Emerson FLEW on the boards as a girls' name. Ick! Aside from the fact that it sounds like a last name....(getting to point 3...)

3... I don't understand why anyone would want to use a name that ends in "-son" for a girl. I dont' even like Allison. I dont' care that it's a bona fide girls' name, it only works for me spelled Alisanne or Allisanne...or Alisann. NO "son" at the end of a girl's name!!

If I hadn't seen people lapping up Emerson for their girls, I'd say, "sure! use it for a boy!" But now, forget about it. If you like the name, marry someone with that last name, lol. (j/k) Of course, eventually, the trend toward Emerson-for-a-girl will eventually wane, so maybe in a decade or so it can be used for boys again. And then people with Emerson as a LAST name won't have to deal with people saying, "no, I'm sorry, I asked for your LAST name first, THEN your last..."

lol...

Well, best wishes to you!
