I love the name Emma, but am afraid that it is getting very popular. I voted for Leyna, but would think about spelling it differently. The spelling you have now is very similar to how many people spell Leyla. How about Laina? or if going for the long E sound, how about Lena?

It's Leyna. Pronounced Lay-Na. It's original without being weird. My 3 yo daughter's name is Gretchen which is uncommon without being bizarre. I love Emma, but it's common and I'm afraid she'll end up in first grade with 6 other Emmas. Madison is one my husband really likes, and I don't hate it (which is saying something because most of his choices I hate.) For example he makes jokes about naming our baby Anita, which is fine except our last name is Fix!

Thanks for responding I really need some objective opinions.

I love Emma too. We had settled on Emma Elizabeth but we read a couple of articles about the most popular baby names of 2003 and 2004 and Emma is right there at the top and I don't want my daughter to end up in first grade with 6 other Emmas. I went through that where my parents didn't know anyone else named Sarah when I was born but by the time I hit first grade there were four of us in one class and I went all the way through elementary school having to use my first name and last initial to distinguish myself and I hated that. Leyna I love because it's different without being weird and I agree about the spelling. I think Laina would be good.

Thanks so much for your help. I really need objective opinions because my husband and I aren't getting anywhere!

Thanks again.

I like the name Emma, but I understand your hesitation because of its popularity. I have a friend whose daughter Emma is about 13. A few years ago, they were at LL Bean trying on boots and the sales person said she was the eighth Emma he had waited on that day.

Now Madison, to me, is super trendy and not nearly as nice as Emma. Personally, I would go with Emma over Madison any day of the week because Emma is a real name that has stood the test of time, whereas Madison is a name that came from the movie "Splash" and to me it's just not classy. There are tons of little Maddies running around (Madisons and Madelines) the Boston area and I'm sure there are down in Jersey, too.

I feel that Leyna may be at the opposite extreme of being an Emma or Sarah. It will probably be mispronounced a lot, so you'll have to keep correcting people. If you really love the name, I'd look in the name books for a simpler spelling.

I voted for Leyna, mostly because Emma is old and too popular and Madison is just way too popular

but I'm not sure what pronunciation you're going for with Leyna - I think she's going to run into pronunciation problems because it's not clear

if you were going for LEE-na (which I really don't like, it's OLD too) it's traditional spelling is Lena

if you were going for LAY-na - I think you should spell it that way - Layna or possibly Laina.

I would defintely like it better with the Long A sound - Layna or Laina

good luck

and please- don't add any more Emma's or Madison's to the millions

How about Elena (eh-LAY-nah)? Leyna is pretty, but sounds made up to me. For me, Emma it too popular right now and Madison has been way too overused.

Gretchen is fantastic, BTW.
