I get the reason for using Ann, since it has special meaning to you. FWIW, it actually doesn't sound all that bad together, even with the back-to-back As (I've heard much worse, and the flow is secondary to the personal significance). ;)
I'm glad you're considering the Mattea spelling. As I believe Annie mentioned, this name is well-known enough that pronunciation really shouldn't be an issue. And actually, anyone unfamiliar with it, or even those familiar with the traditional spelling, would probably be just as likely to mispronounce Mataya, KWIM? To be honest, I'd have no shot at Mataja. I'd assume this was Ma-taja (as in Taj Mahal) or even think it might be a kre8iv name said Mat-asia, if that makes sense.
Depending on how you're pronouncing Lucia, it doesn't seem odd to me at all on a child with an obviously-Polish ln. Actually, if it helps, the only Matteas I can think of have been Italian or Spanish as well! I know I've heard Lucia paired with Polish surnames before, but I'm not sure how it was spelled so I looked it up. According to BTN, it seems Lucja is the Polish form of the name (and I'd assume it'd be pronounced pretty similarly). Similar names listed as Polish included Lucyna and Luiza, so Lucia would seem perfectly natural to me.

Ps. I happened to scan down toward the Ms and noticed they also list Matylda as a Polish form of Matilda. I do prefer the Matilda spelling (what with the current Y-where-it-doesn't-belong trend), but either way the sounds are similar to Mattea so I figured it was worth mentioning as another Polish-feeling option. ;)

Hi Kelli and Annie,
Thanks again! You both give such great advice. I do appreciate it!!
Kelli...the pronounciation we'd use for Lucia is Loo cee a. I do think it's very, very pretty, but have mixed feelings about her nickname becoming Lucy. Although I think Lucy would be cute on a little girl, it also makes me think of a gramma name! lol!!
Anway...thanks again to both of you!
