Is Hayden getting too popular? (for DS)

  • Yes, the name Hayden too popular for a boy. Way, way, way overused.
  • Yes, it's too popular for girls to name a boy Hayden.
  • Yes, Hayden and all other -aden type names are too popular.
  • No, it's okay if you don't mind six other Haydens with him in every grade.
  • No, it's not too popular for a boy. People use it, but not too many.

Here are the numbers on the name Hayden for the year 2004:

For every 1 million babies born, around 1300 boys were named Hayden. This makes Hayden the #88 name for boys from the SSA.

For every 1 million babies born, just over 100 girls were named Hayden. This makes Hayden the #576 name for girls from the SSA.

I would definitely say that the -aden/-ayden/-aiden names are getting popular, but I haven't heard Hayden as much. Jaden/Jade/Jada seems to get used much more. I actually don't know any Haydens, but I do know a couple Aidens, a couple Cadens, and a Brayden.

I seem to be hearing a ton of -ayden names. Looking at the SS list for 2004, I see the following:

#40 Aidan
#60 Aiden
#62 Jayden
#83 Jaden
#88 Hayden
#104 Caden
#105 Kaden
#107 Brayden

Just to name a few.

It's way too popular for me. Hayden is 88, but there are 33 other variations and rhyming boys names in the top 1000. That doesn't even take into account all the girls versions. And it doesn't take into account the names that are close but don't actually rhyme. (Like the three fastest rising names for girls - Cadence, Kadence and Kaydence.) Personally, I wouldn't use any of them.

I like Hayden, but think about all the kids in the class, Jaden, Caden, Braden, Hayden, plus all the various spellings makes for one confused teacher.

I'm a preschool teacher and I can attest to that!
