I'm having a difficult time deciding which name to select. I like Camille and Mairin best (wer'e considering Merrin), but not with Nicole. Camille and Nicole don't sound quite right (maybe because the second syllable is emphasized for both names) and Mairin Nicole has the double L as connector and almost sounds like "Merih Nicole" or something similar.

So since it looks like you're set on Nicole as the nn, I vote for Ella or Cara. I think Ella is cute but somewhat "in style" right now and might be a bit too popular in some regions, (especially since some Elles, Elizabeths, Ellerys, and even Emilys are called Ella as a nn). Cara is pretty - I like CARE-a better than CAHR-a, but either are nice.

Good luck!

Wow, Cara is in the lead and that's my name! I can't believe it!

Here are a few observations on the name from someone who has lived with it.

I was NEVER teased about my name. It's just not a name that's particularly conducive to teasing.

Whether you pronounce it Care-uh (that's how my name is pronounced) or Car-uh, you will always have to correct someone on their pronounciation. Both are fairly common. I think Car-uh sounds a little more European. I think that's how Italians say it. It is the Italian word for "dear."

Be careful if your last name begins with L, M, or N. Before I married, by maiden name began with M. Sometimes people thought that when I introduced myself I was saying "Karen" because of the vowel sound at the end of Cara and the beginning of my last name. They sort of ran together. (I know, Karen ends in an N, but it still happened!) I was so happy when I got married and I figured that this error would not occur any longer. It doesn't, exactly. My married name begins with an L. Now people think I am saying "Carol!"

All that being said, I like my name. It's different, but not outlandish.

Good luck!

Cara
