I like both, but voted for Robert. But I am a traditionalist. Some people might tell you they are boring or common. The thing is, though, they might have been more common years ago, but now traditional names are unusual, KWIM?

The only reason I didn't vote for Elliot is that there was a kid I grew up with named Elliot that I didn't like, so I personally wouldn't use the name. I also wouldn't be surprised to find people using it for girls, since it starts with "Ell" and all the Ella, Elle, Eleanor, etc. names are popular now for girls, and people will find a way to use that sound in a "different" way for girls.

Good luck!

I voted for Elliott only b/c I really don't like Robert. I've had way too many bad associations with Robs, Bob is too boring, and Robby and Bobby rub me the wrong way. There's nothing inherently wrong with the name -- just a lot of bad associations for me, I guess.

I worry that Elliott will get lumped in with the girly Ell- names (especially since some girls are being named Elliott as well), but I voted for it anyway.

Honestly, there's nothing wrong with either name -- they just don't jump out at me.

LOVE Elliott, especially with nn Eli, although Robert seems very boring to me. I like Robert better as a mn.. Elliott Robert is nice.

Thats a good point about Elliott getting lumped in there with the EXPLOSION of Ella sounding girl names. Isabella, Ella, Eleanor, Emma, etc. BTW I also DETEST traditional boy names going to the girls. I think its a horrendous trend. Is nothing sacred? I looked up Elliott for girls names on the SS list and it does not appear. I know one girl named Elliott but I thought she was just a bizarre anomaly.

Also in case this matters to anyone we don't NN around here much. Robert would get called Robert (not Bob or Robbie etc), and Elliott would get called Elliott.

I voted for Robert. I like Elliott but agree that it might get lumped in with all the "Ellie" names.

I haven't heard of any girl Elliotts IRL, but I've seen it a few times online. And there's a female doctor on the TV show "Scrubs" whose name is Elliott, so that may help it to gain popularity among the girls.

I do prefer Robert to Rob/Bob/etc., but too many of those Roberts (including one ex-boyfriend) have rubbed me the wrong way. Still gotta go with Elliott... ;-)

I love love love Elliott. Yes, there might be a random girl here or there using it, but it's still very clearly a boys name. There are certaily more girls named Ryan, Logan, Carter, etc and no one considers those unisex. There have always been girls with traditionally-male names (I know women named Michael, Tyler, Kyle, etc) Just because a few girls use it, doesn't make it unisex.

Robert is just boring to me. I've never been a fan. It's fine, but nothing special. And I just don't like the way it sounds. Purely phonetically -- with no weight given to context, popularity, etc -- I love Elliott a million times more than Robert.

I like the name Elliot, but was scared to use it because of the E.T. association. But, to put it in perspective, I teach 7th grade and most of my students don't know who ET even is. I think it really matches the style of the moment, without sounding at all trendy.

Robert sounds like a boy's version of Susan to me.
