I voted for Maura Jane because I think it sounds better. But this doesn't seem to be a question of simple spelling here. I would pronounce these names differently. Mara would be "Ma-ra" while Maura would be "More-a". I looked up the meanings and they are essentially the same, but the spelling/pronunciation differs based on the language of origin. So, I would recommend saying them out loud a few times and seeing which one you like better.
well my mother is named Mary Jane. when i say Mara it sounds like a weird version of Mary. but i like Mara better than Maura. that looks like Maury (Povich). kayla
I agree with the other posters these are two different names I a prefer Mara. Mara is pronounced MAR-A the beginning like Car. The U in Maura makes a distinctive sound so Maura is like MORE-A.

I voted for Maura but it was really a toss up as I love both names.
These are different names. I definitely prefer Mara over Maura. I pronounce Mara like 'mare-ah' and Maura like 'more-ah'.

These seem like two different names to me, not just two different spellings. I would even pronounce them differently...
Mara- MAA-rah or MAR-ah
Maura- MAW-rah
Edited to add- and I like both names, so I can't decide! lol..

I think Maura is the better choice because to me there the pronunciation is clear - whereas with Mara - you could get some people saying MAIR-ah
I've also seen it spellied Moira - and I think most people would see that and say MAUR-ah, but some always wanted to call the one I know MORE-ah
I like the Moira spelling though - but Maura is also good
good luck
