Help! What to do when you hate a name.

So, my DH watched the movie the Incredibles and ever since has loved the name,"Dash" for a boy. I told him that we can't call our kid Dash. Anyhow, we finally agreed on Ethan for a boy, but now he wants to name the middle name Dashel so he can call him Dash.

I hate the name Dash(sorry if any of your cute kiddos are named this.) I just can't stand it. He thinks I am being ridiculous and it is cool.

We polled our friends and the girls all hate it and the guys think it is cool. What to do???

Do I settle for Ethan Dashel but make him promise not to call him Dash???

or do we come up with a different middle name which will be a huge fight???

maybe I will just have a girl and that is a whole other issue because we can't agree on a first name for a girl.

Basically, my DH whom I love dearly has taste up his rear when it comes to names.

I am with you i think it is a horrible name, but more importantly think of what that name would do to him when he got to school, especialy if he isn't a fast runner and there are so many other things they will call him like dash the rash. and everyone will know that he was named off some silly kids movie and i don't think that it is fair for him... i don't think you should give in here for your babys sake.

Aw, I'm w/your dh on this one. I think that Dash is darling. However, Dashiell is the correct spelling. As much as I personally adore Dashiell/Dash, it is your baby. If you don't love it, then give it the old veto. Ethan is handsome, & it's perfect as a brother to Emily.

I don't really see a problem with Dash/Dashiel. Its nms, its okay. And I'm sorry, but if you made him give up the fn he loves, I think the least you could do is compromise on the mn.

sorry, probably not what you wanted to hear... ; )

I totally agree with you on Dash! I'd say go with Ethan Dashel and just let your DH call him Dash and you and everyone else can call him Ethan. I know a lot of fathers who have a special NN for their son.

HTH!

Thanks for the input. I am guessing he will NN him Dash regardless of the middle name. Atleast he likes Ethan and we both agree on that one.

I think Ethan Dashiell ( the way it's spelled in the movies and is the first name of author Dashiell Hammett) is, if you pardon the pun, dashing.

My boys were named when their father was 4000 miles from home and had little to no input on their names. He managed to find a special nickname for both of them (they're twins) that he still uses for them today (now that they're 19). I think it's wonderful when a dad has a special link to his kids. If you named him Ethan Dashiell (which goes very, very nicely with Emily too), and let him call him Dash, I think it would create a bond between child and father that would please them both. It's an awesome name overall and a feel good winner to me!

Here's an idea. Don't use the name Dashel at all. Come up with another middle name all together that you like, then agree to let your husband nickname him "Dash" - the nickname will probably fit him in his toddler years anyway or maybe labor will be so quick it would be appropriate to nickname him Dash lol - think about it. Good Luck!

I have to admit that I think Dash is extremely cute! Here's what the Baby Name Wizard (an awesome resource BTW)has to say about Dashiell:

"Can a name be too cool? With the imprint of Sam Spade Creator Dashiell Hammett and the nickname Dash, this one is a veritable dry martini. If you think your kid can pull it off, go for it."

Hmmm....not sure if that helps. Either way, Ethan (although very popular) is a fantastic name. Good luck!
