Uh, like Hester Prynne (sp?) in the Scarlet Letter? It doesn't have a very pretty sound to it. Somehow it reminds me more of Lester (Bleah!) than Esther (nice name), probably the spelling.

Honestly I prefer the name Esther which is related as opposed to Hester...I think Esther is kind of pretty but Hester is a bit to harsh for my taste.

Reminds me of Scarlet letter also. It has a harsh sound. It also makes me think of Lester, which brings up the childhood taunt of "Lester, lester the child ..."

On the other hand it's not a "popluar" name.

I think it sounds old. Like an old ladies name or an overbearing teacher. Not a child. However it wouldn't be so bad as a middle name perhaps.

I agree with others. I much prefer Esther to Hester.

I voted that I didn't like it. I just don't think it sounds pretty.

I don't like how it sounds. To me, it sounds kind of harsh and makes me think of hissing. Also, the only Hester I know of in real life or fiction is the woman in the Scarlet Letter who had a baby with her priest and was outcast from society.

immediately brings to mind "The Scarlett Letter" which makes the name sound not just old-fashioned (which is fine, I like that) but also very puritanistic, which seems overbearing.....

Why don't I like this name? I do normally like old-fashioned names, but this is one that I just never took to. I think for me it's the actual sound of the name which is unappealing to me. But that being said, there's nothing really wrong with this name, and if I saw a cute baby named Hester, I might like the name a lot more.
