IMO, it's pretty straight forward -- the name Caroline has a long 'i', the name Carolyn has a short 'i'.

I can't believe even four people (so far as of when I posted) even voted for Caro-LYNN.

Caroline is an established, long-known name.

carolyn is also an established, long-known name

the spelling/pronunciation of either one shouldn't even be open to question

Caroline is considered the more traditional/classic

Carolyn got some run in the 50s/60s mostly.

Well, once I saw Carolyn, I went "Duh" to myself and did feel stupid. But, living here in the US South, (not from here originally), I don't trust myself on pronunciations anymore, LOL!

IMHO, this isn't up for debate. People either say it correctly or incorrectly. My neice is named Caroline, and this is an issue that drives my sister NUTS because some people call her Caro-lyn. If my sister had wanted her to be called that, she would have named her Carolyn. They are two different names. It is mostly older women who make this mistake, though I am not sure what the reason may be. This is just a real pet peeve in my family (if you can't tell!)

LOL, I know where you're coming from!!! Where I live, people pronounce the word "color" like "collar" -- after about 10 years of hearing it that way, I have to pay close attention when I say it to make sure it comes out "cull-er".
