How much does a name's popularity matter to you?
- Not at all, if I like it I'll use it, no matter how popular
- Somewhat; I'm less inclined to use a more popular name, but wouldnt rule it out
- A lot, I specifically look to choose a very popular name
- A lot, I specifically avoid choosing a very popular name

Yup, he did. He likes really plain, common names (John, Marie, etc). Not that there's anything wrong with those names at all but they're just not my style. But I knew how to work him ;). Ds's name is between 100 and 200 and is not really uncommon at all, but it's not super popular. DD's name doesn't appear on the list at all. He was most opposed to her name at first but it really grew on him. Now we can't imagine her anything but what she is. With her name, I tossed it into the ring early on. He emphatically said "NO" right off the bat and I dropped it, knowing he had to chew on it for a while. I also think he came around because I had hyperemesis and was in and out of L&D getting reydrated and had to have homecare. After going through that all, I deserved to name her the name I wanted!
GL!
With our first daughter, this was somewhat of a concern, since we did pick a name we later found to be very popular (Kaitlyn), although at the time, the only child we knew with that name was about 17. We figured since our names were quite popular when we were children (Jason and Kelli) and we'd turned out fine, we wouldn't worry about it too much. However, we did place a little more emphasis on this with daughter number two, choosing a name we've never once heard on another child (Devanie).
I couldn't go strictly by the SSA list, though, because I've noticed many of the names listed as popular, although they may often come up on sites such as these (which have a national reach), may not be popular at all in your particular area. For example, Olivia was also apparantly very popular where we used to live, since at least 3 of the handful of women in our birthing class were naming their daughters that. However, since moving an hour away 4 years ago, we've yet to meet a single little Olivia, despite it's chart position. The same is true for many other names that appear popular, so I don't think I'd base my decision on that.
Overall, if I absolutely loved a certain name, its popularity (or lack thereof) wouldn't sway me. :)
