I think this works with certain shorter names that go well together. The only ones I can think of offhand (other than the obvious Mary-Jo, Peggy-Sue, type names) would be maybe Ava-Claire or Mary-Claire, but there are plenty.

I wouldn't, however, hyphenate two longer names that might not sound as good together. I've seen lots of people do this for the simple reason of pleasing more than one family member (ie. using both mothers' names as the first name) or not being able to choose between two distinct names. For example, if my mother's name was Cynthia and my MIL was Evelyn, I wouldn't name my daughter Cynthia-Evelyn Rose Smith (or whatever), because the two don't sound good together at all.

What names did you have in mind? That might help with the voting ... at least give you a better idea of how those particular names sound together.

HTH!

I voted no because I just don't "get" hyphenation. I know tons of people who use a compound name without hyphenating it (Anna Kate, Anna Claire, Mary Beth, Mark Paul, John Michael - my list goes on and on) and I also know a couple of people who have a hyphenated name, but only use their first name consistantly (Paul-Gabriel is always Paul, Benjamin-Thomas is Ben, etc). So to me, the hyphen just seems totally unnecessary. If you want to use their first and middle name together, do it. If you want to use three names, go ahead - you don't have to hyphenate to get away with it. I have no problem with hyphens, per say, I just don't see why they are necessary and would never use one myself.

My daughter's name is Anna-Catherine. We call her Anna-Cate. I love the way the names sound together.
