I'm trying this again because I totally fouled up the Poll I sent. Anyway, I have heard the name Sterling several times lately and it seems to be gaining popularity in our area. What do you think? Is it too feminine? Another name that is catching on is Stillman. I think Stillman is more masculine and I kinda like it. Whats your thoughts?

Sterling reminds me of a tea service, and Stillman is the name of a college. I can't get past either of these associations, and just like I wouldn't name a child Karat or Tulane, I wouldn't name one Sterling or Stillman, either.

I don't care for Stillman, but Sterling is ok. I worked with an older man with a real deep voice named Sterling about 8 years ago. So, to me it is a very masculine name. I kind of like it. It's not a name that I would personally use, but it's definitely not a name I would cringe at if I heard it.

I like the name Sterling. I do not think it is feminine at all.

I once knew a cute little boy named Sterling, so it sounds fine to me. But Stillman sounds like a butler's/chauffeur's name, IMO.

I like Sterling. I think it is masculine in an old fashioned gentlemanly way. I am not so fond of Stillman though.

Never heard Stillman before, I'd only use if it was a family name. Sterling I like, esp as a mn. What about Sullivan??

Here is the top 1000-ranking of Sterling for the last 65 years - I don't think you need to worry about popularity there. I don't know a single one, any age. Only time I ever heard it was a pro football player maybe 15 years go, can't even remember the last name now.

As for Stillman - it doesn't even being to sound like a first name.

Sterling is okay. For me it definitely suits an older man...probably with silver hair - thanks to the literal meaning of sterling. As far as Stillman goes, I don't particularly like it as a first name. Of the last-name-as-first-name names go, this one ranks low. Just my opinion though.

Okay I get the message! Not a good one. Thank goodness this isn't something that anyone I know is considering. Just thought I would throw it out there. Thanks for your input. I have a few more that I have collected lately that I think I will post. Thanks again!

Sterling feels snooty to me somehow. Isn't Stillman a chainsaw brand?
