Jack and Evan as brothers?
- yes, that sounds great!
- no, most people know that Evan is derived from John, too
- btw, middle son is Luke

Not in a million years. ;)
To be fair, I'd be willing to bet many would think they worked great together, both being short, four-letter, relatively popular names (in fact, they're numbers 34 and 38 on the SSA list, so not far off at all!).
BUT -- and that's a big but -- anyone who knows anything about names (and I'm not talking about just us, because John/Jack/Evan/Ian/Sean, etc. are probably some of the best-known name variants out there) will simply assume you had no idea Jack and Evan were forms of the same name. Even worse for you, since you actually DO realize that, so you'd pretty much always be wondering if everyone else did as well. LOL
Now I could almost understand if you simply loved the sound of the name and didn't realize it was the same as Jack until it was too late, but there are so many similar names out there, I wouldn't even give Evan a second thought in your case.

I voted Yes even though I dont like Evan, b/c I dont think 99.9% of people know the etimology of these names, and even if they did, I dont see what the big deal is.
However, as I said, Im not a Evan fan. Partly becuase there was a terrible Evan on an airplane recently (an out of control 3 year old one row ahead of me) and partly b/c I knew an Evan growing up I wasnt fond of. Neither which are reasons for YOU not to like the name!
My DS is Jack too, I think Ive decided to go with Cole for this one. I like the short four letter names too.
Although I don't love Evan, I wouldn't find Jack and Evan weird as brothers. I just don't think Evan is nearly as nice and strong sounding as Jack and Luke.
