Dh loves the name Jack and wants to use it. But, I'm hesitant (even though I also love the name Jack) to use it with Smith. It sounds so plain to me. And call me crazy, but I'm worried if there is another Jack in his class and the teacher has to call him Jack S. that it sounds like Jack Ass. Am I analyzing this too much, or do I have a real concern here? Thanks so much!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have to agree with you here. Although I really like Jack, lately it has just gotten too popular for my tastes. Then paired with last name Smith, it is just plain. Here are some classic name ideas that aren't so popular:

Emmett Smith

Maxwell Smith

Asher Smith

Toby Smith

Felix Smith

Luke Smith

Julian Smith

Nathan/Nathaniel Smith

Cody Smith

Timothy Smith

Jeffrey Smith

Liam Smith

Owen Smith

Henry Smith

Zachary Smith

Jeremiah Smith

I love Jack too, but with Smith it is a little plain. Jack S. sounds like "Jack Ass" to me as well, sorry.

What about:

August
Beckett
Cole
Declan
Griffin
Holden
Miles
Spencer
Troy
Tucker
Quentin

My uncle is Jack Smith -- one of many, I'm sure. FWIW, we always thought it was funny my grandmother chose such common names for her three boys, given their very-common ln: Jack, Jeffrey/Jeff and William/Bill.

Getting back to Jack Smith ... he always got a lot of "John Smith/Pocahontas" jokes, even though his given name was simply Jack. Actually, nearly everyone assumed his actual name was John, and it was considered very odd that he didn't have a "formal" name. I realize it's much more common now, but at the time it caused him a lot of grief (always having to correct teachers, deal with doctor/insurance hassles and have documents corrected when they were filed as "John Smith," etc.).

If you love Jack, I'd probably give him a more unique fn with the mn Jack or even a less common related name (not John LOL) -- and you could use Jack as a nn either way. For example:

Walden Jack Smith, called Jack -- at least at home, but he'd have the less-common option of using Walden Smith for school, work, etc. -- just using Walden as a random example, btw LOL

Ivan Smith, nn Jack -- really, you could obviously use the nn Jack for any form of John (but many of those are popular as well ... Ian, Sean, Evan, etc.)

Jankin Smith, nn Jack -- this is the original pet form of John that Jack is derived from

Just some ideas. ;)

I know Jack is super popular right now but if you love it, it shouldn't matter! So, my suggestion is use another super popular version...Jackson and call him Jack. At least this way Jackson S. doesn't have the Jack Ass sound (I voted for Jack Smith and didn't think about this until I read your post...in which I got a great laught b/c it does sound like that!) I voted for Jack Smith though b/c I like the name Jack very much...I think it is a classic/great 'boy' name! WDYT of this idea?
Good luck!

I know you probably didn't realize you were addressing your reply to me, but the OP will be more likely to read your response and be able to consider your idea if you reply to them (instead of just hitting reply on the last post). Next time, just hit the number "1" down at the bottom, where it says "Messages In This Discussion." That'll take you back to the first post and you can reply to that person so they'll see it.

Oh it's not a big deal to me at all. I do this all the time accidentally. Didn't there used to be a tab bar at the top where you could specify who you were addressing the post to w/o having to go back to the original post? Nonetheless, I read everyone's responses and just figure they're geared towards me. ;-)

Thanks everyone for your input!!! It's definitely making me think I need to come up with a few new options that we both love.

Oh, good! I generally read through any replies to my own post as well ... I just know some people only read the replies they're notified about (if you have the email preferences set up that way), so figured it was worth mentioning. ;)

As to the drop-down "to" option, I don't think it's available to free members. Your reply just automatically goes to the post you hit "reply" from, KWIM?

Aha, I was wondering about that. I used to have a membership, but cancelled recently. Must be one of those extra iv features. Not being able to scroll through replies is enough for me to want my membership back. This one post at a time stuff is for the birds. Ahhhh!!! Oh well. :-)
