Jemima?

  • I love it!
  • I like it.
  • It's okay.
  • Ummm, no.
  • Absolutely not!
  • I've been digging this name lately. I've also been

  • into learning about the Hebrew roots of my Christian
  • faith, and this is a Hebrew/Biblical name. What
  • would you nn with? Jemma? Jemmy? Nothing?

I posted the poll.

When I first heard "Jemima" I thought "No way!!" But I think that's because of its black-mammy-syrup connections, which is too bad because honestly I think it's a lovely name. Recently I saw a beautiful young lady on TV whose name was Jemima (reality show, not a fictional name). So I've been rethinking it since then ... it was also cool to find out today that it has Hebrew roots since, as I said, I've been studying the Hebrew/Jewish roots of the Christian faith recently. I would consider pairing it with my mn Dawn.

Jemima Dawn sounds nice! It is quite popular and "normal" in Britain, and usually we follow those trends so maybe it will become more accepted soon in the U.S. I like it!

this name can never get away from the Aunt Jemima association - how about just Jemma

Can't? Maybe not...but I think we maybe should try...I mean, we were talking about whether or not Rory can break away from the Gilmore Girls and people seem to think it can and it has no real history, whereas Jemima has far more history than simply a racially loaded pancake schill...I mean, it's a great Old Testament name, Job's daughter that he actually put on equal footing with his sons (in his second family, AFTER all the disasters)...pretty cool story for our times. And the "dove" meaning doesn't hurt...

(And I'm thinking, if we ever have a second daughter, Jemima might well be one of her middle names because I do like it that much. But, then, if we ever have a second son, I like Amos for one of his middle names so...)

I agree with you -- the part about the name not being able to overcome the Aunt Jemima syrup connection. Certainly it can, with a little work, and it's a really lovely name once you start thinking about it differently (once you get over that initial "ugh" feeling). I don't like the nn Jemma as much -- seems to '90s trendy to me; maybe it reminds me of Jenna too much. But dh likes Jemma.

nn Jemma is nice though! :-)

Jemima may be ok in England (where it is sometimes used), but it is too closely associated with syrup here!

I'm generally a lurker here, but I had to decloak for Jemima! Jemima is absolutely lovely and I think it's time for American's to get over that pancake thought (are we a nation of consumers or what?!) :) Jemima, nn Mimi would be utterly refreshing to hear!

What pancake syrup? Y'all are so culturally limited to commercial American food products. If Oscar can come into Vogue after being green and surly for 35 years! I think of Jemima Puddle Duck from Beatrix Potter, and a sweetly decorated Peter Rabbit nursery...
