I don't know if it's because I am from Chicago and grew up here while Walter Peyton and Michael Jordan were the biggest things in sports....but I don't get it with these names. I guess I can see using them as a middle name for a boy. But to me, it's them. It's the athletes. Not girl names by any means.

Hello, I can appreciate the loyalty to Chicago, I grew up there, too. Walter Payton is spelled Payton, though---just wanted to let you know!!

Yeah but still..pronounced the same way. Naming a girl Peyton/Payton is like naming her little Walter to my ears.

I know...I'm weird.

No, you're not weird. They're boy names, and in the case of Peyton surnames. Not girl names by any means.

both are definitely unisex, although I see both as still tilting farther toward the boy side.

I know a few girls named Jordan, but far more boys

I can't think of any Payton's that I personally know, but I know I'm hearing it here and there. I like it for a boy, but spelled Payton. I think I would like the Peyton spelling for a girl. It's one unisex name I'd probably like a little for a girl.

I agree that the name Jordan overall gained popularity because of Michael Jordan. I think the current rush on Payton has more to do with Indianapolis Colts quarterback Payton Manning than with the former Chicago player Walter Payton.

Oh yeah, Payton Manning! I totally forgot about him...and you are right, I'm SURE that's why it's gaining popularity.

I don't have any idea who Walter Peyton/Payton is, but I do recall that in the movie "The Hand That Rocks the Cradle" the psycho nanny's name was Peyton. Just another mark against it. :)

Yea, I agree. And I don't even care for Peyton on a boy. I can handle Jordan I guess.
