We just had a client in whose name was Gladys Allegra. I'd never heard Allegra before, and it intrigued me. I also thought it sounded very cool with Gladys, although I'm not a huge fan of Gladys.

WDYT? Cool? Weird? Cool fn or just mn? Just interested to hear your thoughts...may keep Allegra in mind if we ever have another girl...

Allegra? Are you serious? NO NO NO! Allegra is the name of a popular allergy medicine (the commercial has talking allergens that say "maybe the two L's in allegra stand for long lasting"). This is a TERRIBLE name for a child. You would just be setting her up for teasing. If the catch phrase above sticks you could have a teenage daughter who is known to be "long-lasting" (sexually). Please don't do that to a child.

I'm not going to say crazy, but I too love Allegra and think "Allegra's Window" before that lousy allergy medicine. I'm almost sure they picked allegra as the name for it because one of it's meanings is "quick" and that's a good thing for allergy meds.

However, I've been a music fan longer than that medicine's been around and I just might use it as a middle name if I have another girl. I completely love the name, but as a first, it just isn't feasable anymore. Maybe we should get people to boycott the medicine? There are other allergy medicines out there!

Allegra is just too associated with the prescription allergy medication now to be used as a name anymore. jmo

Curses on that allergy medication! I LOVE the name Allegra, and for me, its associations are only pleasant ones--Italy and classical music! It roles off the tongue beautifully--I definitely think you should use it. Maybe if your last name begins with a "D," you should reconsider, though, because then your daughter really would be "Allegra-D!"

Like you, I'm not so crazy about Gladys...

I might be open to it if it weren't the name of an allergy medicine!

Wow, maybe I'm *on* drugs! I totally didn't think of the medicine, just how cool the word sounded as a name. Darnit, another perfectly good name ruined by capitalism! Next thing you know, my favorite U2 song will become a commercial jingle for Alka-Seltzer!

Thanks for setting me straight, ladies. Good think I don't have to come up with a name real soon!

I love Allegra. I think it's a remarkably sophisticated name, but of course there's the allergy medication of the same name. Just something to bear in mind.
