Almost every name that uses Katie as a nn is used to the extreme. But, I love those names too. Growing up, Kathleen was pretty common, but I don't hear it as much now days. Katherine has always been/will always be common. And, Kaitlyn is very trendy now. My favorite "Katie" name is Katrina. I love it, it isn't used that much and you can still get Katie from it.

I'm very interested to hear opinions about the name Katie also -- cuz I'm thinking of using it if my next baby is a girl (I'm due in March). We decided on the name Katelyn Elizabeth waaaay back when we were expecting our firstborn (a boy) and again with our second (also a boy!). I know only one Katie under the age of 6, so maybe its usage is on the decline?

I personally think that the nn Katie/Kate is overused. If you're going to use such a beautiful and refreshing name as Kathleen in a world of thousands of Katelyns why would you give her a nn that hides what a beautiful fn she has. Katie is 2 syllables as is Kathleen, so, it's not like you're saving yourself any trouble by using a nn. I would say just call her Kathleen.

I agree. There are zillions of Kaitlins and Katherines who go by Katie. I say use Kathleen. It's pretty, classic, and rarely used now.

I don't think Katie is too overdone. I don't love it, personally...but if you do, why not use it. My DD is Kathryn and I have always hoped that she wouldn't be called Katie...not because it's a BAD name in any way, but just because I think Kathryn, Katherine, Kathleen, etc...are so much prettier, kwim? Kind of like calling your DD Anna when she has a longer and more beautiful name, like Annabel or Anastasia... I think Katie is good as a NN though. When I read the title of your post I was 'worried' that you were thinking of naming your DD Katie, as an actual first name. Eeeks (NMS as you may have gathered). I think that Kathleen NN Katie is terrific, though! HTH!

Kathleen isn't too common, but the nn Katie is extremely common in our area: Oklahoma. We have a lot of Katy/Katies due do the overly common Katherine.

Help or hinder?

Good luck finding that perfect name!

I love the name Kathleen! I would just stick with using the full name-it's beautiful and not heard often. While I think Katie and Kate are very sweet, yes, I think they are way too common. I hear those two names everywhere-they are the most common names I can think of aside from Elizabeth and Sarah. Let your daughter have a name that stands out more. She will be one of hundreds of Katies but most likely the only Kathleen around. Good luck! :)

I've always liked Kate/Katie. However with the overabundence of Kaitlyns(all spellings) it does tarnish Katie a bit. I love Kate...vs. Katie. The suggestion of Katrina was pretty. Or to use a full name, Katherine, no nickname, is quite refreshing these days. JMO, good luck, if you love it, go for it.

My niece is 3 and her name is Kathryn, but only goes by Katie. I love the name Kathryn so when my niece was born and my sister said they were going to call her Katie, I was disappointed. My niece doesn't even really know her full name. I think Kathryn is so much prettier. I guess I am not big on nn's in general. I prefer to call my children by their full names rather than nn's. As far as the popularity of the name Katie, I don't know too many, but I think it is becoming very popular since Katie can be the nn for some many names, Kathryn, Katelyn, Katrina, Kathleen, etc.

Kathleen/Katherine, etc., is a beautiful, classic name, and so is Katie.
