Mari (pronouced Mar-ee) - cute, but seems like a nn, and I think people might have trouble figuring out if it is pronounced like Marie or MAH-ree.

Millie - definite nn. I don't know if the world is ready yet for the resurgence of Millie. For me to nn a daughter this, I would have to be assured that her looks and confidence could pull it off. If she had gross motor issues and wore glasses, it would be a bit much to saddle her with, imo, and since you never know what kind of child you are going to get, I would personally give her a formal name that could have Millie as a nn and then use it if it fits. (I am risk averse when it comes to names.)

Maureen - I think this one's ready to come back. It's pretty

Molly - a little too "cute" for a grown-up, but pretty as a nn

Madigan - WAY too trendy for me. It will date her in the Madison timeframe. There are so many Maddies out there right now due to the huge numbers of Madeline/Madison

Madelyn - OK, it's much, much better than Madison, but I prefer a more classic spelling and I think there are too many

Maggie - nice nn, but give her Margaret as her formal name for her business card

Mallory - nms

Megan - I've always considered this a faux-Irish name, but it's OK

Michele - pretty

Mari- I know a girl with this name, but she spells it Mahrie, which makes it easier to pronounce
Millie- don't really like it
Maureen- old lady
Molly- very cute, I love Molly
Madigan- I really like this name, although it may sound a bit harsh. Maddy is a nice nn. In the book A Pilot's Wife, the daughter has this name but spelt Matigan, nn Mattie.
Madelyn- very pretty, but Maddy is a very common nn.
Maggie- I love this name, its adorable. Margaret nn Maggie is my favourite because then she has another option when shes older. She could also go by Greta or Meg.
Mallory- reminds me of the girl from the Babysitters Club. I don't really love it
Megan- very pretty
Michele- its okay

I like Margaret nn Maggie, Megan, and Molly the best.

I like Mari, maybe spelled like someone else suggested so people don't call her Mary. I see that Madalyn is in the lead, which is a name I also like. My only concern with that is it very popular there days, where as I know no Mari!

Well, my toddler is Megan, so I had to vote for that. :-) I like that it's common enough for people to spell and pronounce it, but I don't hear of many Megan's around her age. She goes by Meg a lot, too, and I think that's a cute nn.

Actually, I like a lot of your M names, and we considered several of them, but DH was happiest with Megan. Madeline was our frontrunner for a long time before Meg was born, but DH didn't like the nn Maddie, and I realized just how common it was getting, especially with all the Madisons out there, too.

Mari is pretty, but with the I at the end, it seems unfinished to me. I think I'd like it better as a nn for Mariana or even Marilyn just to make it seem more complete. Likewise, Maggie is a cute nn, but I'd prefer Margaret as the given name.

I like Mallory a lot, too, and think that it's pretty and well-known, but not overused.

Great list!

Stephanie! Your girls have the same initials, reversed. That is so neat. Did you do that on purpose!?!

LOL! We didn't really do it on purpose, but it was kinda neat that it worked out that way. DH really wanted to have a "thing" with naming the kids. In fact, I think he would have liked giving them all S names since our names start with S. :-P

Megan was one of very few names we agreed on the first time, and Joy is his favorite aunt's name (who has no children of her own). Once we found out we were having another girl, I wanted to use May as the mn since that was my grandmother's mn. Since some books say that Megan and May have the same meaning, I was hoping to find a name he liked that meant Joy so that the girls' names would have the same meaning. He considered Aliza for a while for that reason b/c he so wanted a "thing", but he just didn't like the name at all. :-P (He tends to like short, simple names and classics -- Julie, Beth, Erin, Katherine, etc. -- and doesn't care at all how popular they are. I didn't want anything "weird" since our last name is difficult, but I wanted something a little more uncommon and with a little more "flair".)

Anyway, I found out that my great-grandma's name was Amanda Juliana, and since he liked Julie and I kinda liked Julia, we started talking about it. We ended up adding a 2nd N b/c he didn't want it pronounced ah-na, and I decided that I liked the nn Annie better than Julie.

Seriously, Julianna was the *only* name we agreed on, but DH loved that we had our "thing" with the initials, and I think it's neat, too. The question is do we have to keep up the MJ/JM trend with future kids? ;-)

Okay, so that was probably more detail than you wanted, but there's the story. :-)
