Malak?

  • Love it!
  • Great name, though not one I'd choose myself.
  • Nice enough.
  • Eh...
  • Not great.
  • Just awful.

I love it and it sounds so strong. I am unfamiliar with it though, are there any other valid spellings? I'm not sure I like the Malak spelling.

Hi, Nikki. Thanks for the feedback. To answer your question, I have no idea whatsoever about the origin of this name. My cousin found out yesterday that she is having a boy, and her husband likes Malak (this is his spelling). My cousin can't figure out how she feels about it (neither can I, for that matter), so I thought I'd throw up a poll to get a feel for others' reactions.

Interesting. I searched around and found that it is Arabic and can be spelt Malak or Malik. Malak means "angel" where Malik means "master". Other similar names they could consider are Micah, Madden, Matthias, and Matteo.Names with the same "feel" are Kai, Silas, Atticus, and Rhett. Let us know what they decide!

I found something similar...although I think that Malik is pronounced mah-LEEK, whereas they're saying this more like MAA-leck (short A sound, like in basket, not AH or UH).

And great minds think alike...I already mentioned Atticus to her (of course, this is also because I'm a lawyer and could kid myself into thinking that they named him after me!), but I don't think they're going to go for it. :-(

With the "angel" meaning I'd assume it was related to Malachi. Maybe they'd also like that, with the nn Malach/Malak? Just a thought! ;)

I said "not great". I mean, actually, I WANT to LIKE this name, b/c I agree with the poster that said it sounded strong. By the same token, when I see "Mal", I automatically think "bad", b/c that's what "Mal", or some variation of "Mal" means in Romance languages. Also, it looks Arabic to me- either Malak or Malik seems Arabic- I don't know if that would drum up negative connotations for you...
