I've loved this name for years. However I've only had boys so far and by now there are too many names in the family with the "sand" sound for me to use it. I believe it is the French form of Millicent and I know there is some classic play with Melisande as the lead female character.
I would put it on your list for sure. I think it's just lovely.

I would say it Mel-ih-SAHND in English. I would also read the play and/or opera before using it -- she's not exactly a Disney princess.
That said, I think it's a beautiful name and that the pronunciation is pretty intuitive and easy to remember once you've heard it.
