Just some food for thought on Welsh names. I love them and have a large Welsh contingent in my family (My own name is Meredith from the old Welsh Merdudd). DH and I had just about settled on Aelwen for dd, due in Oct. However when I started telling people about the name we were thinking of I innevitably got asked to say it several times and spell it multiple times too. Add to that the questions of whether or not we'd gotten it from Lord of the Rings or some other fantasy book (this may not bother you, but I have an irrational aversion to my daughter being called an elf), and we evetually decided to drop the name off our list.
Granted we live in a very homogenous community in suburban VA, and anything name that's not in the SSA top 100 tends to make people look at you funny. You may be in a more cosmopolitan community where people are more aware of names outside of the Anglo-Saxon norm and it might not be a problem for you.
If you really love one of these names then go for it. I think Welsh names are beautiful, but keep in mind that if you don't pick a Welsh name that is commonly known in your area such as Gwyneth or Bronwen or even Meredith, then you and your child are in for a lifetime of misspellings and mispronunciations.
Good luck,
Meredith
My DH & I are welsh, have lived in the USA for 5 yrs, we have a DD Bryony Niamh born in Wales, a DB Garin Dylan born in USA and are awaiting the arrival of Lowri Seren on 9/22. I love Welsh names, but agree that you have to "test" them on friends, co-workers to see how much their mispronunciation is going to bug you. We have lots of problems with Bryony & Niamh, none with Garin, Dylan, Lowri or Seren.
Good luck
Tracy
