Is Myrtle a cute name again?

  • Very cute! I love that name!
  • It's ok, nothing special.
  • Ugly! Your asking for trouble naming your daughter that name!

I think it goes well with all the floral names that are en vogue right now, and it's definitely not unfamiliar, what with a character in Harry Potter being named Myrtle.

I think it's on the verge of making a comeback.

Not that long ago (maybe a few months) I was asking people (not just in this board but also at work, among friends) about the name Pearl, and lots of people said that it's an old-lady name, that they would never be "brave enough to use it," and so on. But recently I see Pearl being discussed on name boards as a very reasonable and even pretty choice, and I've also seen it in birth announcements. When I was younger, Hannah was seen as an old-lady name, too; but look at it now! Myrtle strikes me as much the same -- on first hearing, people think: no way; but upon further consideration, it seems to fit right in with all the cool old-fashioned names and floral names. It's certainly no stranger than Hazel, for example. Anyway, I think it's a great name.

All that said (previous posts) I don't think it's a cute name at all. It still sounds very outdated and old lady-ish to me; like Gladys (my mom's name btw), I don't think it CAN sound lovely. Just my opinion, of course! :)

I think of either Myrtle the turtle or the alter girl character of Steve Urkel from Family Matters. no good feelings about it, but maybe the harry potter reference might help.

Other names that have been brought up: I LOVE Hazel (it was on our list for Solomon - but J Roberts got there first!!!). I also love Pearl. Call me weird! And we love Olive, too.
But, Myrtle...to me it LOOKS neat - love the spelling, but it's very nasally sounding or something. Kind of like you're choking on something or coughing. Not so nice.
But...it would be different and set her apart. NMS, but I wouldn't hate it on someone else's kid. It's much nicer than something like, say, Neveah...

Siggy by the AMAZING Alicia at Momsquawk.com! Thanks!

I think you hit the nail on the head about the way it sounds. I also don't really care for how it looks on paper, lol. Too 'word-ish' to me, I don't know. I want to like it, b/c I love when "old" names come back, but I just can't get used to this one.

I think I have a hard time with all those consonants together too- r, t, and l. I think that is what helps do this name in for me.

not only does it have a really ugly sound, it conjures up images of really old women, and then there's the "Myrtle the Turtle" potential for teasing

don't do it!

This name sure does seem to bring a very emotional response from people. We loved the name but so many people are beyond just not liking it to the point of almost anger that we will probably pass. Strange the reaction a name can bring.
